A Dose of Reality

Okay, yeah, yeah, yeah we might have let that whole blogging thing slide for a bit. Matt’s come back with a vengeance and he’s been pointing out how I really should blog again. The problem is, about what?! So, while I am still trying to come up with topics, here is a quick post inspired by Pinterest and my “sister from a different mister”, Crystal.

If you don’t know, Pinterest is a virtual bulletin board. It allows you to “pin” things from all over the internet into a more organized version of Google Image search. You can spend hours on there, our friend Dave rather accurately described it as, “Fantasy Football for women.” It also serves to show exactly how insanely non-creative I am compared to 90% of women out there. My favorite aspect of it, besides about 999,999 recipes I need to try, is the problem solving side. People come up with AMAZING ideas I would never have thought of.

I could do a whole other post (and probably will) on the couple ideas I have “stolen” from Pinterest, but this is about one certain thing. Crystal found a post about how you can keep sheet sets together by storing them in the matching pillow cases. Now this is insanely clever, no argument. I learned this trick awhile ago, I’ve since forgot where, but it is handy. Although, here is my problem; Martha Stewart originated the idea (I guess) and she says it will look like this:
What Martha says my linen closet would look like

 Mine actually looks like this:

And this is after I spent time making sure I folded them “neatly”…

2012-366 Day 46 – Sick Day I

First cold of the year, I’m just going to preemptively assume that this won’t be the last and number it already. We’re going to blame someone at Disneyland for this one. Stayed home today, resting up, hopefully back in action tomorrow. Although if Master K hadn’t just had a kid, I’d consider going to Karate tonight, so it can’t be that bad.

2012-366 Day 45 – Soccer Update

A while back you may remember that I signed up for a soccer league, and you may have been wondering what has become of it. Well, it turns out that a lot of people want to play soccer (surprising, huh?). So many people, in fact, that the league is filled past capacity and they had to set the season back a week just to get their hands around what was going on. So, rather than starting February 12th as planned (which is good, since I would have missed the first game because I was at Disneyland), the league got pushed back to starting on the 19th. We would all hear from our coaches by the Tuesday before, and they would let us know the time of our first game.

So I heard from my coach yesterday and he let us know how the powers that be decided to handle the overflowing league problem. There are going to be 2 concurrent leagues of eight teams, East and West (our league), each with it’s own champion. Unfortunately, since their are 16 teams and only 10 or 12 teams can play in the alloted time slots (I think it’s 5, 6, 7, 8, and 9 pm, but they may be able to work 4pm) there will be byes and, yup, our team got a first week bye. I think I’ll get to play an actual soccer game someday!

I volunteered to play goalie and the offer was accepted, so I’m excited about that. I’ve always like playing goalie (mainly roller hockey and broomball before) as I actually enjoy having the pressure of being the last line of defense. It also means I get to use my hands (although I had to review the rules on that, and must remember not to make that my default). I will, of course, update with the results when I finally get to play my first game.

2012-366 Day 44 – Dodger Blog Softball Tournament Part 2

Just a quick hello to any visitors who may be new to the area having read Part 1. I’ll put a little note as to what is going on here with the 2012-366 stuff at the end if you’re interested, but otherwise we’ll just jump back into your regularly scheduled program.

It was getting pretty late on the same day of the tournament as I wrapped my last post, so we’ll pick up with a few more details from the third game I can remember now that I’m not in an exhausted state (I also fixed the score sheets in the last post so they are properly oriented). First off, I had calculated before the game that, while we were playing one of the remaining undefeated teams in the third game, we only had to defeat them by more than one run to leapfrog them in the standings by virtue of tiebreaker (Reminder: we did so 27-4, giving us identical 2-1 records but affording us the first tie breaker of fewest runs scored against). Secondly, I remember that, while proudly boasting that I only got out once in the last post, my first hit was a sky high pop to second into the sun that was infinitely playable, so let’s hear it for retroactive, non-sleep deprived humility. Thirdly, sausage (yes, you had to be there). We may now proceed to the playoffs, commenced by this reminder picture:

After what seemed like the appropriate amount of time, I went into the club to check the standings and playoff bracket. We made it as the fourth seed and would once again be playing on the Dodger Stadium field. Going outside to announce this to the team, I was then greeted with the one question I didn’t have an answer for, “Who are we playing?” because, well, you know, I forgot to look. Running back inside I note that, while we had leapfrogged the team we just played in the standings, no one else had leapfrogged them so we would be playing them again (they earned the fifth seed). Since the first and second seeds got the bye I looked up one level and found that the team we played in the second round had earned the number one seed and would be waiting for us in the next rematch should we prevail in our first rematch.

Now by merely stepping onto the field for the fourth game I had accomplished my main goal for the day, which was to get more than the minimum guaranteed three games (which was the sad fate for 8 of the 14 teams). Doing so and having a shot at avenging our only loss should we win? Pure gravy. We had to wait for the last game to finish at Dodger Stadium which took us right past the scheduled start time, then had to wait a little bit more for field maintenance and warm ups.

After playing all three of our previous games as the visitor we were finally able to be the home team (due to seeding), which was a little sad in that we couldn’t directly carry over our offensive roll (though that had probably been a little blunted from the delay anyway). Over the course of the day I lived up to my advanced offer of playing any position necessary by playing catcher, first base, second base, third base, left field, and right field at various times, and this was the game where I started in left. The first out was a fly ball nearly directly at me which let me settle down a bit (although nothing else came to left while I was out there). If I remember right, the other team mounted a bit of a rally in the first inning, but we didn’t allow any runs to cross the plate. Our offense proceeded to more than match the previous game, going 15 batters before the first out was recorded. We wound up besting our first game score, winning this one 27-2 (and this is why I keep score during our league games, as I don’t remember how I did outside of one later at bat, a line drive that went down the right field line and landed on the chalk – easy extra bases if not an inside-the-park home run – but the umpire ruled it foul as I blocked his view going down the line. With the score being what it was I was disappointed but fine with it, although when I deposited the next pitch behind second base for a single I did point out that I hit it as far from any lines as possible to help make it easier for everyone. That got a laugh, although I really should get out of these parenthesis before they become self-aware and eat this blog post).

We had taken care of business and earned a spot in the semi-finals with another shot at the one team that had beat us. I had the hope that maybe a crucial variable had changed between the games and we could somehow hold them to about the same amount of runs while the intervening victories had sparked our own bats back to life, but, while we did do better in the first inning on offense (as visitors again due to seeding), the boom was lowered on us in the bottom of the first (quite literally, as I was playing catcher and one of their guys hit a three run home run outside of the entire complex onto the hill beyond where the air just vibrated on impact). We took our 31-7 drubbing (although I was disappointed since I was playing catcher all game and of the 31 runs, not one of them was a close play at the plate) and figured this was probably the team to beat in the whole tournament. About half the team stayed to watch the finals, an 18-11 victory for the team that had defeated us (although they made some uncharacteristic errors early, leading to our queries of “why didn’t they do that for us?”).

I cannot overstate what a great time I had and how much I loved our team. I don’t know what the odds are of randomly picking twelve people (well, ten others, as I’m included in that count and had recruited Brian) and having such a great blend of personalities and abilities (I maintain that while we were tied for third place overall, we were first place – non-ringer division, as it was quite obvious that a significant portion of the team that beat us had played together before). There is not a single player on the team that I wouldn’t love to play with again, and I will be a little disappointed if there isn’t some way for us to get to play again should this event become an annual tradition. Here’s our team picture from Dodger Thoughts (I’m second from the right, and I’m not sure how I got my arms to look that big):

Dodger Thoughts Team Picture

So again, thanks to the Left Field Pavilion blog for putting this together, thanks to Jon for writing Dodger Thoughts and having me on his team, and thanks to everyone who came out to participate, especially our team, for making this a spectacular memory and event.

NOTE: Softball stuff is over, so if you want to go now, feel free, I understand. Onlytwopeople.com is a blog my wife and I put together (as we have often said we are the only two people who could put up with each other as a married couple) and, as a New Year’s resolution I committed to writing a blog post everyday this year (hence 2012-366, as there are 366 days this year with leap year). It is a creative exercise for me to get my writing juices flowing again and as such I don’t expect huge traffic (if any), but would love it if anyone wanted to stick around for the ride. I also love doing things like this tournament that guarantee at least 1 or more guaranteed topics, as I’m realizing that 366 is a lot!

2012-366 Day 43 – Disneyland II

Off to Disneyland today with our friends from Alaska and their extended family. I always forget that cell coverage in the park (at least for Sprint) is TERRIBLE, so last time I tried to update from there nearly failed. Will wrap up part two of the tournament tomorrow, so you can be in suspense for one more day (or not, up to you). I will leave you with this haiku:

2012-366 Day 42 – Dodger Blog Softball Tournament Part 1

That was totally awesome, just a great experience. Since the location (Big League Dreams) is out in West Covina, I had to get out of bed before 7 am on a Saturday. (Boooo!) After getting everything together, I swung by to pick up Brian, who had answered my call when I sent out a message stating that we had room for one more player. We loaded up the car and headed out, with our first game scheduled in an hour and a half (at 9 am).

The drive down was uneventful, and we pulled up to the gigantic complex with a bit over a half hour until game time. After getting told that I couldn’t bring my Powerade in and a return trip to the car, we entered the facility and attempted to track down our team. This was easier said than done because, again, this place was huge. I knew our first game was on the Fenway replica, so we headed that way after determining our team was not by the Dodger Stadium field. We finally found them on the other side of Fenway, the far side of the complex, as I recognized our coach from pictures online. Most of the team was there already, so a quick round of introductions familiarized ourselves with the people we would end up spending most of the day with.

The game before ours ended and we took over the third base dugout. We were determined to be the visiting team by coin flip, and we prepared to get our first at bats against the Save the Dodgers team.

The environment was very special, and we started our game with a bang (well, there were a lot of walks involved, so maybe not quite a bang) by scoring a ton of runs in the first inning. I was batting tenth this game (the lineup was handled very simply, order of arrival, and we had 12 people overall) and walked on three straight pitches, all of which were well inside, which was disappointing because I was looking for an outside pitch to take to right field to take advantage of the weaker fielding over there. I wound up scoring a couple batters later (forgive the lack of detail as to how, but it was a long day with a lot of softball). I came up to bat in the second inning with two runners on and saw the first pitch start in, but then start tailing back outside. I jumped on it and lined it three feet inside the right field foul line, where it skipped past the rightfielder and headed toward the wall. I’m not sure what happened next, as my head was down running, but I’m told that the ball rattled around a bit out there and I was able to touch them all for our first home run.

I actually hit the ball better in my third at-bat, getting it over the right-centerfielder’s head, but was held at third for a triple (knocking in two more runs). In my final at-bat, I thought I might fool them by pulling the ball, and wound up flying out to left-centerfield (I told everyone that if I got the double I would claim a total bases cycle using the walk instead of a single). We won the game handily 30-4. Fielding-wise I did not get a single ball hit to me in right field or at 1st base the last inning. Probably why I look so bored in the background of this picture on Dodger Thoughts:

Mary pitching, Matt in background

At this point we didn’t quite know what to make of our team. Yes, we had scored a ton of runs, but frankly a lot of them were gifted to us. We didn’t want too big a head going into the next game, little did we know what we were walking into. . .

Since we were all teams based around Dodger blogs, the tournament directors wisely chose to make sure that each team got to play at least one game on the Dodger Stadium replica. It was great to see all the little details put in, even if the Diamond Vision didn’t really work and the far right field bleachers were a little washed out for some reason. We were visitors again and this time flipped the line up so I was batting third. Rather than the hot start of last time, this time we were facing an extremely competent defense and were made short work of (I got one of the handle and flew out). The other team then came up and proceeded to crush the ball (most of the team looked like they played for the local colleges). We never could mount much offense (I went 0-3, all fly balls) and went down 11-2.

Our lunch break arrived and we retired to the Stadium Club restaurant for some pizza and soda. It was decent enough fare, but since we all hadn’t ate much, we gobbled it up. Since the club had views of all the stadiums, we were able to watch the team we were going to play next while we were eating. I kept going back and forth between the tournament score sheet and where we were sitting until I finally got the bright idea to take a picture:

It came down to this, the top six teams (out of fourteen) made the playoffs, and at 1 and 1 we were around fifth or sixth with four undefeated teams left in the tournament. The team we were going to play next was one of those undefeated teams, but they had drawn a favorable schedule and we were pretty sure we could handle them. We moved to our third stop, Tigers Stadium, were made visitors yet again, and got ready to try and win our way in to the playoffs.

We switched back to our lineup for the first game and went to work. We put up ten runs in the first inning and never looked back, ending up winning 27-4 (I don’t even remember how many times I got up, but I remember I only got out once on a grounder off the handle late in the game). Having taken care of business, we only had to wait and see what the final standings would be and what seed we would have if we made the playoffs. I did manage to continue my streak of appearing nonchalantly in the background of the pictures at Dodger Thoughts, however:

James at bat

Since it’s late (and you probably figured this out from the title), to be continued. . .

I’ll leave you with this preview:

2012-366 Day 41 – Dodger Blogs

Continuing our tour of my RSS feed (our previous installment being Webcomics), we now turn to the section for Dodger blogs. I thought it appropriate since I’ll be playing in a softball tournament where all the teams are representative of the various blogs. (Oh, you didn’t know that? You must not have been around here long.) This is much shorter than the webcomics entry, and actually just recently lost an entry since the great Dodger Divorce went silent (although rightfully so, since, well, you know, the divorce is over). Again, in alphabetical order.

Dodger Thoughts – http://www.dodgerthoughts.com
This was the first Dodger blog that I started following (which is why I selected their team first when signing up for the softball tournament), and it just recently moved to a new home with it’s own domain. (It was a part of ESPN Los Angeles before, and is actually on it’s sixth home, I believe. I started reading around home number four.) It is “Jon Weisman’s outlet for dealing psychologically with the Los Angeles Dodgers and baseball.” We share a lot of view points and he writes in a refreshing, easy to read style. He has also contributed to Variety, so there is a bit of a pop culture crossover as well, which can be good or bad.

Los Angeles Dodgers Feed – MLBTradeRumors.com – http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/
This is for Dodger specific articles from MLBTradeRumors, and is particularly handy during the run up to the trade deadline. This is generally where I get breaking Dodgers news from, although all of the sites I follow generally update rather quickly.

Mike Scioscia’s Tragic Illness – http://mikesciosciastragicillness.com
I started due to the site’s hilarious reference in the name (a Simpson’s episode where Mr. Burns replaces the company softball team with Major Leaguers who all get felled in one way or another during the episode. Scioscia contracted a tragic illness helping people in the nuclear power plant.), and I stayed because of the straight talk and funny posts.

True Blue L.A. – http://www.truebluela.com
A quality blog with a variety of contributors, this one does more analysis that the other ones. If I want to know about the upcoming Dodger Minor Leaguers and their chances in the Big Leagues, this is where I go.

In all, these sites let me cover pretty much everything I’d want Dodger related, while not bogging me down in information I’d never get to otherwise.

2012-366 Day 40 – Internet Presence

This post inspired because my name shows up in a blog much more popular than my own today! Less than two days until the softball tournament!

Have you ever Googled yourself? (Wow, I wish there was a better phrase for that.) Are you the first person that comes up under your name? What about your screen name? If you share your name with a celebrity or just have a common name you’ll have to do a bit of digging to find yourself. Since I have neither of those things, I come up pretty early in any Google search. How early? Well, let’s take a little trip. (Remember to log out of your Google account when searching – or better yet use incognito or InPrivate browsing sessions, otherwise Google’s accumulated information on you will skew the results.) All results as of 2/9/12.

My LinkedIn profile takes the top spot here, the second entry is for my office hours. Oddly enough, the third entry is for a Facebook page, but not mine (then again, I have my Facebook page somewhat locked down). My Twitter account comes in fourth, and the fifth is a White Pages search that lists four cities, three of which I’ve lived in, so I’m assuming there’s at least some reference to me there (not interested enough to go look).

A CAD drafter who owns mattworland.com bumps me out of the top spot here, although the homepage of my site (mworland.com) comes in a respectable third. I’m listed under the fifth link, the collection of Matt Worland’s on LinkedIn. Amusingly, a link to my (severely out of date) ratemyprofessors page shows up on the first page here (these reviews are from back when I was a Graduate Assistant teaching lab classes in 2005).

It’s not particularly odd that I own this one, as it’s the screen name I use all over the internet. In fact, I came up with it in High School, so I have accounts that I forgot about when I scroll through these search results. I originally wanted disciple21, but that was taken at a lot of places. My first substitution was disciplet1, but, as some people pointed out, that looks like disciplette 1, which wasn’t really what I was going for. Since I was taking french at the time, and vingt-et-un is 21 in french, disciplev1 worked for me. I also liked the fact that if you took it as versioning, it could be interpreted as disciple version 1, which seemed appropriate given my computer background.

All in all, not bad, although probably a little easy as my name isn’t Thomas Hanks or William Smith.

2012-366 Day 39 – Dentist

First off, I remembered that I missed a movie yesterday, so if you want to go back and look, you’ll find it at the very bottom of the entry under the footer.

Jess and I have our dentist check ups today with the new guy (I had the joy of visiting him when I was diagnosed with the need for a double root canal last November and our old dentist had unceremoniously dropped us). I have no idea why a dentist would want to drop me as a patient, I’m a veritable dental gold mine (also a literal one, at least on the bottom back right). I’ve had at least four root canals and it is often joked that my teeth are more metal than natural now. I’m surprised I don’t get radio stations in my head.

While I do brush my teeth every night (I swear), I have a hard time bringing myself to do it in the morning, as I know I’m just going to eat something in a minute and undo it. I know, I know, that’s not how it works, but it’s the morning and I’m tired, so my brain accepts it. I’ve also suffered from some acid reflux in the past, and that’s been known to wear down your teeth rather quickly, so I may have had some help getting this way.

So we’ll see what the new guy says. Who knows, maybe I’ll escape relatively unscathed this time. It’s happened before (just not often).

2012-366 Day 38 – 2011 Movies

Well, originally this post was going to be about how few movies I saw this year and how many more I was looking forward to seeing in the upcoming year, but then I went and actually looked at the release list and realized that I had seen a few more than I thought. Look at the list below and see if you can spot any similarities:

Thor
X-Men: First Class (twice, actually)
Green Lantern
Cars 2
Transformers: Dark of the Moon
Moneyball
The Muppets
The Artist
Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol

That’s right! Nearly 50% of the movies I saw this year began with the letter “T” (assuming you count “The”, which we totally are for this example). Okay, maybe it’s more the case that 3 out of 9 were superhero movies (I swear I saw Green Lantern at the discount theater, so not that much money was wasted), 3 out of 9 were nostalgic (I swear I only enjoyed the part where stuff blew up in Transformers, it wasn’t that hard), and 2 out of 9 were actually nominated for a Best Picture Oscar (I swear I only went to see Moneyball for the baseball. . . okay, actually the baseball part wasn’t all that accurate). And I’m fairly certain that Cars 2 was actually an experimental film dedicated to the dangers of over-saturating the market with product (at least that’s what I’m going to believe, it keeps Pixar’s strong movie string intact).

Here are my one sentence (or so) reviews:
Thor – Part of the whole Avengers build up, a serviceable origin and a whole lot of hammer slinging fun, although I almost enjoyed the cameos and shout outs more than the actual movie itself.

X-Men: First Class – A loose tie in to all the X-men films (a sort of origin which I think they tied TOO strongly to the film continuity, even when it didn’t make sense), I enjoyed it despite being pretty predictable (don’t get me started on poor Darwin).

Green Lantern – Was slightly less painful to watch then I believed it would be (keep in mind, I went in with phenomenally low expectations), I think an over-reliance of CGI is what killed them here.

Cars 2 – Like I said, between all the cross promotion and toys being sold, I’m fairly certain this was an experiment of some sort. The movie itself was okay, but pretty unnecessary.

Transformers: Dark of the Moon – I enjoyed most of the parts that didn’t feature Shia LeBeouf on the screen (i.e. the actual Transformers). Sadly Shia was on the screen a lot.

Moneyball – A good movie, unfortunately the more you know about what actually happened with the A’s of that time period, the more you see the holes in the story. Once I took off my baseball geek hat, it was a lot of fun and very well done.

The Muppets – Just a fun, nostalgic blast (which is what I was hoping for), I very much enjoyed the way they updated the mythos while staying true to everything that came before.

The Artist – While it came out in 2011, Jess and I actually went and saw this on our anniversary in 2012, but it still counts. I thought it was well done, but found that watching a silent film was a lot more work than watching a regular film, as I was constantly afraid of blinking lest I miss a vital plot point or clue. It wound up being an unnecessary bit of work, but I just didn’t want to miss a side glance or gesture that would tell me more about what’s going on. I am also apparently terrible at lip reading.

Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol – Huh, went way over a sentence for The Artist, and since I almost left this one off the list they almost balance out. Despite my distaste for Tom Cruise, my Mission Impossible nostalgia won out, and it was decent, but seeing as I nearly forgot it all together, I guess that pretty much says it all.

There’s already a significant list of 2012 movies I’m looking forward to (The Definites: The Avengers, Brave, The Dark Knight Rises, The Hobbit Part I. The Strong Possibilities: The Raven, Rock of Ages, G.I. Joe: Retaliation, The Amazing Spider-Man, Skyfall, Les Miserables), so I’ll probably get to more movies this year than last. As is my tradition, I went to many of these movies alone (it used to be that after my last final every semester, I’d go see a movie by myself to mark the end of another set of classes. Now I just do it for fun), although I did catch one showing of X-Men with Stephen and saw Cars, Muppets, and The Artist with Jess. In all, I do enjoy the sense of scope seeing a movie on a big screen provides, but it gets increasingly difficult to justify the expense as it rises.

UPDATE (2/8/12): Yup, I missed one. Realized last night when I noted that I had seen one of the Oscar nominations for Best Animated Feature Film and it wasn’t Cars 2 (since Cars 2 wasn’t nominated, ouch). Nope, not Kung Fu Panda 2 or Rango, but actually Puss in Boots, which I enjoyed a lot, mainly due to the fact of how well it captured cat behaviors while being funny. So up that count to 10, I guess.
