2012-366 Day 105 – Weekend Wrap Up II

Sunday (4/8) – Easter: He is risen indeed.

Monday (4/9) – Reflections: It’s probably no surprise that after writing this post, things got so busy that it’s been difficult to put up any substantial posts since. Sadly we’re entering a very busy season with other people’s weddings and pregnancies aligning to take up a bunch of time with the various showers and ceremonies, so shorter posts may be the norm for a little while.

Tuesday (4/10) – Pictures: Not much more to say on these guys, but I’ll definitely keep looking for more interesting images to share with you.

Wednesday (4/11) – The Dentist: Had to go back on Friday for an adjustment to even things out, and Jess is doing much better now. Speaking of Jess, she updated her area of the blog with an awesome construction cake that she made for our honorary nephew, you should go check it out.

Thursday (4/12) – Allergic to Hitting: I need to learn to keep my big mouth shut (but then what would I have to write about?), because the day after I posted this article the second baseman for the Tampa Bay Rays landed on the shoulder of my number one pick and knocked him out for two months. I was going to change my team name to the Chatsworth Cursed, but Jess liked Allergic to Hitting too much. A near 25% of my original draft has been placed on the disabled list, with the majority projected to be missing months of time. At least my hitters are starting to get over their allergies.

Friday (4/13) – Rain II: Missing the rain already, none projected on the weather forecasts, but at least that means soccer won’t be cancelled tomorrow.

Today featured Karate, a run, and a birthday party for one of our good friends. Tomorrow features church, a birthday party for a three year old, and a soccer game. Yeah, we’re a little busy.

2012-366 Day 104 – Rain II

Updating from my phone since we’re at a friend’s house watching their twins and it’s been a weirdly scheduled day. Very much enjoyed the rain storm today, missed the lightning but heard some of the thunder even in my office, which is internal to the building. Also went outside for some of the downpours, they were the hardest I’d seen in a while. Wish this weather would come around more often, but I really can’t complain about LA weather.

Got a busy weekend ahead of us, so we’ll get back to it since I already had to take a break from writing this to help resettle the twins. Footer will return tomorrow.

Forced Creativity and First Cakes

There are seasons to life and I am apparently in one of “forced creativity.” I say that tongue in cheek, no one is holding a gun to my head and making me be creative. It’s more that situations are arising that are requiring or allowing me to express creativity. So the next several posts I’m going to do are on what I have been up to the past months and what is still going on.

Here’s the situational run down, all of my projects have been due or will be due to one of the following:

– We bought a condo, and after years of apartment living I could finally decorate with permanency (and paint!) so I have been coming up with ideas for doing that.

– Also, having the space in the new place allowed me to work on some project ideas I have had on the back burner for a while.

– Then you have the sudden baby boom that our church is experiencing. I am not exaggerating when I say Matt and I know no less than 10 couples that have either had a baby in past 3 months OR are expecting a baby this summer. This means lots of upcoming showers.

– Matt and I are both in the bridal party of our friends’ wedding in June. So that means I’m involved in helping with the wedding, planning the shower and bachelorette party. Also, Matt’s sister is getting married too, so there is another set of prewedding events!

– I’m an auntie! A proud one at that, so when I either get an idea or see one to shamefully steal from someone else. I’m going to!

– I discovered pinterest which will simultaneously make you realize how very not creative you are AND make you think that you can totally refinish that table using just coffee and vinegar then sew matching stylish curtains out of leftover grocery bags in 6 easy steps.

So, we have to clear out a bit of a backlog from projects I did earlier this year. Starting with my honorary nephew’s first birthday!

Crystal emailed me a picture several months ago of a cake, she said something to the effect of “I would love to do something like this for Elijah’s birthday.” And because she is my friend and I love baking, I responded with “I bet I can do that if you want me to try!”

This was the picture she sent me:

After some searching, I found the original blog that posted it. It seemed simple enough so I thought I would try it.

Now, if this really was a crafting blog I would have taken step by step pictures of how I did it. But this isn’t and I didn’t. So I’ll just tell you… you can skip this part if you like, just scroll down to the picture…

The cake itself was just yellow cake (box mix ::gasp!::) with some dye added (you’ll see later), and homemade chocolate butter-cream frosting (which I ate more of that day than I care to admit). The dirt is crush chocolate cookie.

I have not worked with fondant before, so I wasn’t about to buy a ton of it and dye it, but I also wasn’t about to invest in a giant thing of pre-colored orange fondant either. Thankfully, Wilson makes this kit with orange, yellow, pink, and purple fondant. Options to do something else at some point but small and cheap enough that if I wasted it, it wasn’t a big deal. Perfect! Also, I didn’t want to invest in fondant tools for what could be a one-time thing either, especially with a small kitchen! So I used what I had. I rolled it out with a rolling pin covered in plastic wrap to prevent sticking. The cones were my favorite thing over all, SO CUTE! I used a lego block to etch the lines for the square bottom to the cones, then just cut those with a butter knife. I shaped the cone part by hand.

After I put those on with the toy (found on Amazon) and the dirt pile, I felt it was missing something. I came up with the traffic signs spelling his name. The fondant I brought came with yellow, remember? How to cut them out? I have a set of salt and pepper shakers from the 99 cent store from when Matt and I first were married. It was the perfect shape! I just used the lid to cut out the shapes. I had some black dye leftover so I colored some store-bought white icing I had and used that to pipe his name on to the signs.

And here is my finished cake!

Not too shabby if I do say myself!!

Now for the surprise!

Everyone thought the cake was adorable as it was, but there was one more thing I was very anxious about. You see, I found something out in that original blog post, an added feature you couldn’t see in the photo. And by the very nature of what it was, I would have no idea if it worked until everyone else did. Thankfully, when Crystal cut into the cake, this is what everyone saw!

Caution tape!

It worked perfectly!!! Now this does make it hard to serve as it loses it integrity, but it looked so fun!

You can read the tutorial here on how to do it, it actually is quite easy. I made one mistake early on though, because I was making caution tape, I thought yellow and chocolate cake would be best. It doesn’t work because cakes do not all bake the same way as far as moisture and texture. The chocolate was denser and stickier than the yellow cake and caused it to fall apart. You have to use the same mix for both cake layers and just dye them which is what I ended up doing. Also, don’t panic if your circle breaks in the process, frosting fixes quite a bit and no one will know once it is cut!

So there was my first big project! Adorable and quite tasty!

2012-366 Day 103 – Allergic to Hitting

My fantasy team started its life as the Chatsworth Knights, but I changed the name today to Allergic to Hitting, because, apparently, they are. Let me back up a bit. I was invited to play in my first serious fantasy baseball league this year after having played in casual leagues for the past five or so years. I’ve always done fairly well in these things and they add some excitement to all the non-Dodger games everyday, so, in all, it’s just fun to participate. That being said, I’d like to win. At this rate (thankfully it’s still extremely early), that is not going to happen unless my hitters can get over a severe allergy to hitting.

Things started inauspiciously as, on draft day nearly a month ago we had a comedy of errors that nearly made me miss the whole thing. The settings were incorrect so the commissioner cancelled the draft and I logged off. Well, he was able to get them fixed but had no way to reach me other than email, and I was going to go back to my regularly scheduled day. He got my phone number off my boss and managed to call me right as the draft was starting, but by the time I got online I had missed my first pick. I had been waffling between two players with my first pick (Ellsbury and Longoria) and wound up with Ellsbury, but I probably would have picked Longoria had I had the chance (easy to say in hindsight right now, as Ellsbury is hitting .130 with 0 HRs and Longoria is hitting .471 with 1 HR). Here’s how I ended up drafting and a little commentary on each:

Round
1 Jacoby Ellsbury – Hopefully will start hitting soon. Like his team, a major disappointment so far.
2 Adrian Gonzalez – Decent, but capable of so much more. Should be my anchor.
3 Adrian Beltre – Stats pretty much mirror Gonzalez at this point, hope they both trend up.
4 Michael Bourn – My speedster, has stolen one base so far since he hasn’t gotten on (.125 batting average).
5 Elvis Andrus – Another speedster, has stolen zero bases but at least hit one home run (same .125 batting average).
6 Nelson Cruz – .190 with one home run, should be a slugger
7 Matt Cain – I know, I had to pick a Giant (I actually have no Dodgers). I blamed the commissioner as he’s just as big a Dodger fan as I am, but picked Lincecum before I picked Cain.
8 Michael Morse – And here’s where the horror show begins, as the problem with drafting a few weeks before the season rears its ugly head, injuries. I have, by far, had the worst luck with injuries. Morse here is out indefinitely and has been dropped from the team.
9 Jeremy Hellickson – My pitching has done very well (I currently lead in ERA and WHIP), and Hellickson had an excellent first start.
10 Corey Hart – My MVP so far, .429 with 3 HRs.
11 Kevin Youkilis – Counting on a bounce back year, have so far gotten a major splat (hitting .100).
12 Chris Carpenter – Nerve injury with an indefinite time table to even start rehabbing. Dropped.
13 Matt Garza – Decent first start, excellent second start.
14 Neil Walker – One hit so far this year (.059).
15 Neftali Feliz – Traded for bullpen help after both closers I drafted went down with injuries.
16 Andrew Bailey – First closer I drafted, out until after the All Star break at least.
17 Doug Fister – Injured three innings into his first start, on DL (in real life and on my team).
18 Yadier Molina – My MVP runner up, hitting .304 with two HRs.
19 Brandon McCarthy – Solid pitcher, already has three starts due to early Tokyo games.
20 Jeff Francoeur – Doing well for a late round pick up, hitting .333 so far.
21 Marco Scutaro – Dropped before the season even started, haven’t really regretted it (someone else picked him up and just dropped him again this week). I’ve always felt that’s key to doing well in fantasy sports, don’t get attached to anyone.
22 Kyle Farnsworth – Second closer drafted, out for a couple months. Dropped.
23 Aroldis Chapman – Traded to the commissioner (who really wanted him) for the Indians 3B of the future.
24 Adam Dunn – A prime bounce back candidate and a good deal this late. Average isn’t great (.222) but has a HR already.
25 Jose Altuve – I like him a lot and definitely felt he was a bit of a steal with my last pick (according to ESPN about 36% of people agree with me), he’s hitting .368 for me so far, so I’m happy.

My team is sitting in 8th place as of this writing, leading two categories (Earned Run Average and Walks Hits per Innings Pitched) and dead last in two categories (Batting Average and Stolen Bases). Seeing as my hitters aren’t hitting, my Runs and Runs Batted In are towards the bottom of the league (hard to score if you’re not on base or hit people in if you’re not, you know, hitting), although I’m in the middle of the pack in Home Runs which is a good sign when my hitters start picking it up again. My pitching, on the other hand, is doing great so far, although I still haven’t recorded a Save (so last in that category) after having to patch up my bullpen. Wins have been a bit hard to come by so far, despite the good performances, and my strikeouts are a bit north of average for the league.

Again, I’m enjoying the experience, if just a bit frustrated by the day to day performance. I’m sure I’ll bring it up again, and if you’ve made it this far, I’m impressed. If you want to check in on the league, you can go here.

2012-366 Day 102 – The Dentist

Schedule’s a bit off today due to the fact that Jess’ dentist appointment went a lot longer than expected. In a dramatic reversal of fortunes in our last visits, I got a clean bill of health and Jess was told she had to have two onlays (crowns that don’t go all the way to the gum but just lay on top). Today’s appointment was to get those onlays done.

Now we’ve recently moved to a technologically fancy dentist that has one of those while you wait crown (and onlay) machines that creates the crown (or onlay) from pictures of your mouth without having to take an impression and sending it to the lab. This works great, so long as the machine doing the scanning doesn’t crash, which is apparently what happened today. Jess was stuck back there for about four hours, which, sadly, I can identify with as that would place it third or fourth on my list of longest dental visits. It also prepared me for the slight breakdown that occurred afterwards, as I was close to a similar one after my longest visit (turns out having you jaw wedged open for six hours and the ensuing pain merely from your lips having completely dried out, let alone any other poking, prodding, or drilling that had to be done, is a remarkable efficient form of torture). Jess was a trooper and made it to the car without incident, was treated to Senor Sol afterwards, and is well on the way to recovery.

Hopefully we can flip the script back after this, as I’m still better built to handle dental trepidation merely due to experience. Or, actually, better yet, let’s hope neither of us have to have any more major dental work.

2012-366 Day 101 – Pictures

A quick couple thousand words, if you know what I mean.

Jess and I were taking a break and getting some drinks from one of the campus mini-marts when I noticed this row in the refrigerated case:

Apparently the glue didn’t hold on the label or something like that, but it certainly looked very sketchy. I certainly wasn’t going to be buying or drinking one of those label-less beverages.

The second one’s actually from back when Jess and I went to Songfest. Apparently Pepperdine also had an attack from the Red Bull fairy, although someone had already taken the can on this one:

2012-366 Day 100 – Reflections

Woo, 100 posts! I’d like to take a few hundred words and reflect on what I’ve learned so far from this experience and, as usual, there’s not much you can do to stop me. I suppose you could always not read it, but if you decided to take that route you’re probably not reading this paragraph either.

I’m still not certain what I was thinking when I made the resolution to write everyday at the dawn of the New Year, and whether it’s been easier or harder than I expected. I knew ahead of time that finding something to write on for 366 days was going to be a challenge, but I’m not certain I was prepared for how soon that uncertainty became a reality. That being said, I’ve found it interesting how often some of these posts expand to a lot more than what I was anticipating. A prime example is the recent vacation recap I did; I had originally planned on doing a few hundred words wrapping everything up. I had thought I had covered most everything in the food section, but I was over 2000 words before I knew it. It was that sensation which I was looking to recapture when I started this project, sitting at the keyboard and having the words tumble out at a pace that is nearly too quick to keep up with. Having gotten to experience that feeling again (which I probably last felt in college) has already made writing everyday (even those that I didn’t want to) well worth it.

I will admit that hitting the triple digits is quite heartening and, while I will spend more time in the triple digits than I did in a double, it feels like a significant accomplishment in this project. I really appreciate all of you who are still checking out the entries, whether you’ve read every one or just check in from time to time. I hope that the little glimpse you’ve gotten into my understanding of the world has been, at the very least, somewhat interesting. While I maintain that I keep doing this mainly for myself, I certainly would be happiest if someone else got some enjoyment out of these posts too.

Thank you again for reading. Here’s to the triple digits, may we keep going strong!

2012-366 Day 98 – Weekend Wrap Up II

Missing a week due to vacation, let’s go in the way back machine and see what we missed.

Monday (3/26) – Plateau: So it turns out the best time to start new projects isn’t right before vacation. Right after vacation isn’t so hot either. That being said, I’ve made a little progress on some of my goals in the meantime.

Tuesday (3/27) – Injury: Heel’s doing better since I’ve been taping it pretty regularly, although there’s still some flare ups. Bottom of the foot’s pretty raw now though, should probably rest it a bit after Ragnar.

Wednesday (3/28) – Magic Time: Saw McCourt sitting next to Magic on Opening Day in San Diego and was both excited and sickened at the same time (you can guess what for which). Dodgers already are 3-0 this year, but, then again, they’ve been playing San Diego. Looking forward to when McCourt is on the way out of town.

Thursday (3/29) – Cars Land: Nothing more to say on this one for now.

Friday (3/30) – Mountiantops: We took a small drive today and wandered into a new mountaintop park that we’re going to go back and explore later. Have to take some binoculars next time though, we weren’t sure if we could see the ocean but it certainly looked like it.

Saturday (3/31) – Directions: Haven’t found any new bad directions yet, but, rest assured, I will let you know when I do.

Sunday (4/1) – Soccer Game 5: Have no game due to Easter this weekend, but I am looking forward to the last two games since we now have all the juggernauts in the league out of the way. We are almost certainly not making the playoffs, so these are probably my last two soccer games (I think I’ll be sticking to Softball and Volleyball).

Monday (4/2) – Resolution Update: An update on an update? Probably not necessary.

Tuesday (4/3) – San Diego Vacation I (The Surprise): And you’ve probably heard enough about this . . .

Wednesday (4/4) – San Diego Vacation II (The Food): this . . .

Thursday (4/5) – San Diego Vacation III (The Activities): and this.

Friday (4/6) – When They Say That: And I could do these all day, but they seemed to be pretty hit or miss, so I’ll spare you.

2012-366 Day 97 – When They Say That

When they say that everyone is special . . . they don’t tell you that not everyone is using the same definition of the word “special.”

When they say that it takes two to make a thing go right . . . it doesn’t mean that the next person you see is necessarily the correct number two. (Okay, maybe just it’s just Rob Base who says that.)

When they say that you have a chip on your shoulder . . . it’s not necessarily a Kettle Chip. (But wouldn’t that be awesome if it was?)

When they say that it’s just a drop in the bucket . . . you still probably shouldn’t drink out of the bucket to see what it is.

When they say that a house divided against itself cannot stand . . . it appears they don’t get the concept of load bearing walls.

When they say that a leopard can’t change his spots . . . it’s still a bad idea to try to do it for him with permanent marker.

When they say that something is a blessing in disguise . . . you should probably still check under the veil to make sure you’re marrying the right woman. (Ooh! Old Testament burn!)

When they say that someone is a doubting Thomas . . . you know what, Thomas has probably taken enough of a beating in 2000 years. (Ooh? New Testament Anti-burn?)

When they say that you’re getting a slap on the wrist . . . make sure they’re just using their hand and not a weapon.

When they say that you’re between a rock and a hard place . . . try walking out at a 90 degree angle to either the rock or the hard place. (Wait, isn’t a hard place just a metaphorical term? Walk out through the metaphor!)

When they say that it is the dog days of summer . . . do you think dogs are offended?

When they say that you should exercise your brain by taking a different way to work in the morning . . . they don’t mean just driving the same route in reverse. (Sorry Officer MacDougal.)

When they say that you’re a big fish in a small pond . . . it doesn’t mean that you can splash around in the school’s fountains. (Sorry again, Officer MacDougal.)

When they say to walk a mile in someone else’s shoes . . . don’t steal them and then run that mile. (Again Officer MacDougal, sorry and thanks for letting me pay for bail in the pennies from my drawer.)

When they say a picture is worth a thousand words . . . Wait, I could have just been doing pictures all this time? I’m outta here.
