2012-366 Day 115 – The Board

Another feature of my office (see Office Decor) is the whiteboard on my wall. While the outside houses some work related stuff, it has become tradition for visitors (mainly Dennis) to begin decorating it. I erase it every month, and this is the first time I’ve taken a picture of it, so the previous artwork has been lost to history. It is generally themed to the current month and/or current office environment.

If you ever stop by, you can have a turn decorating the board too. I just ask that you keep it clean and don’t draw anything that will scare the maintenance people.

2012-366 Day 114 – Recovery

It became readily apparent to me around 10 pm last night that, after having a crazy Friday and Saturday doing Ragnar and coming back Sunday to a soccer game, I was going to be needing another day to rest and recover. So I took today off, hung out with Jess this morning (who likewise could use a day of rest, but also could use the afternoon to get ahead on the multitude of projects she has to accomplish for all our friends and families various wedding and baby events coming up), went and saw Hunger Games this afternoon while Jess went shopping (it was pretty much what I expected, which is to say I wasn’t overly impressed. Am mildly curious where it goes, but not enough to read the books), went grocery shopping with Jess, and then spent the evening at home. Just watched the Dodgers win, so that’s good. Now I’ll put together the Ragnar entries I promised and then get back to my recovery.

2012-366 Day 113 – Soccer Game 7

Well, if you’re going to go out on a loss, might as well go out on an interesting note. Okay, definitely don’t want to go out that way, but that’s what happened. It took me a while to get into the flow of the game (can’t imagine why) and an early screw up that lead to a goal along with one I should have got if I had just got my leg out a little further. We went into halftime down 7-3, and I ended it on a bad note by getting frustrated and taking my first shot of the season from three quarters of the way across the field rather than passing it. I settled down before the second half determined to do better.

A couple early goals in the second half got us back into the game pretty quickly. I was able to make several good saves and keep us in the game, which is weird since I should have been more tired after Ragnar. The only goal they got by me going into the final minutes was one that glanced off my ear and we were all tied up at 8-8. At some point one of our goals got miscounted as a single point when it should have been two (being on the other side of the field, I don’t know exactly when this happened. I found out after the game). A penalty at the other end of the field with a minute and five seconds left caused a lot of confusion, and our captain called timeout. Upon resumption of the game, we had several good attempts, but the scorekeeper didn’t start the clock. In fact, it took a good 45 seconds to a minute for the clock to be started, and naturally the other team got a breakaway with 20 seconds left that I ran out on, got a piece of, but couldn’t get it far enough away and they put the rebound in.

So if either the clock works or the goal is counted correctly, we tie. If both are correct, we win. The only combination that results in a loss is what happens. Probably a fitting end to my soccer career, as I definitely won’t be playing in the fall due to Rocky Peak Sports commitments, and will probably stick to volleyball and softball from now on. I had a lot of fun and am extremely grateful to my team for putting up with my learning curve. I made some good progress, but have a long way to go before actually being good.

Soccer was a fun experience and I’m glad to have had it. I can look forward to volleyball starting in the summer now. I’ll put together the Ragnar entries from my Facebook posts tomorrow, so you can look forward to that.

2012-366 Day 112 – Ragnar Day 2

Day 2 Facebook posts from the Ragnar Relay and final reflections following.

1. “Got more sleep than I thought, now van 2 is off again.”

2. “Getting ready for my second leg.”

3. “By the chute.”

4. “Much better this time. Leg 2 done in temperature 50 degrees cooler. Runner 10 is out on the course.”

5. “Just realized I slept through all the baseball games today. Apparently my fantasy team appreciates my dedication, big jump today. :-)”

6. “Wrapping up our second legs, runner 12 is on the way!”

7. “Mcdonalds, Ragnar breakfast of champions.”

8. “Soooooo tired. Heading to some sleep, hopefully, before embarking on 11.1”

9. “Got a couple hours of sleep, still have to wait a while for my last leg.”

10. “Van 2 is back on the course for the home stretch!”

11. “Runner 8 is out, I’m on deck.”

12. “And the monster is slain, my final leg is done! Three more until the prize!”

13. “If I meet the person who decided to put San Francisco in the middle of the @ragnarrelay #ragnarsocal 11.1 mile leg 33, we will have words.”

14. “So, in case you are curious, 11.1 miles in San Diego will take you from Sea World to Hodad’s to the airport to the Midway to the convention center. The only thing missing was Stephen Rodgers house.”

15. “Got interrupted posting that I was waiting at the finish line because we had to, you know, finish. All packed up and heading out.”

16. “I couldn’t post this until I saw Jess in person, but I have a souvenir from trying to tie my shoe in the dark last night next to an open SUV window.” – This post featured a picture of the cut on my head, which I’ll save your from the repost of.

17. “I am sore, but functional. Thanks everyone for all the love and support, Ragnar Socal 2012 was a blast! Now the trip back home and playing goalie in my soccer game tonight.”

18. “Just ran into a whole Ragnar team (Case of the Runs) at Pizzeria Luigi down here in San Diego. Their runner 9 and I commiserated over the hill in leg 3 and the lack of shade on Ontario in leg 1.”

And 18 posts on Day 2 (okay, the last two are technically from Sunday, but were Ragnar related, so I thought I’d include them). Day 2 featured the part I was least looking forward to, an 11.1 trek through San Diego. Jess, my sister, and Dennis made the trek down from L.A. to cheer me on out on the course, and Jess supplied me with some of a Hodad’s shake that I had repeatedly requested. An unpleasant surprise during the run was a mile long, straight up hill that I was not expecting. I walked it to conserve energy, since there was still 6 miles left afterward. Of course, the day started with a run at 2 in the morning, a 3.8 miler that I ran at a near 10 minute mile pace.

Once again, Ragnar was an awesome experience, though certainly a challenging one. I’m proud to have been a part of it once again and especially proud to have completed the longest leg on the schedule this year for the team. I walked to the side from the exchange point after that run and gave a shout of triumph, which petered out a bit since it was my last bit of energy. I hope to make it four in a row next year.

2012-366 Day 111 – Ragnar Day 1

Here’s the Facebook posts I put up on the first day of Ragnar and some follow up reflections.

1. “And we’re off! Ragnar 2012!”

2. “At the first major Ragnar exchange, the last runner from van 1 is on the way to us.”

3. “Runner 7 is on the course, I’m number 9”

4. “Runner 8 is off. It’s HOT!”

5. “Didn’t get a chance to post before, but I survived my first leg (barely, so hot!). Actually carried a water bottle even though I hate holding things when running.”

6. “And it’s 101 out.”

7. “And now van 2 gets a much deserved rest.”

8. “Of course it’s 66 degrees at the next major exchange now.”

9. “Blog update today and tomorrow is a placeholder for all the stuff I am putting here.”

10. “Attempt one at futilely trying to sleep during Ragnar, begin now.”

Came in at exactly 10 posts on the first day. We actually got up to 105 according to the car thermometer at one point, so all of our afternoon legs suffered. I think I averaged around a 14 minute mile, by far my slowest, and I regretted the Krispy Kreme doughnut I had at the first exchange. We recorded a temperature of 55 at one point for our night runs, so we actually had a 50 degree difference between our first and second runs. It was certainly a crazy start to the relay, although our second major exchange was one of the nicest yet, at the Welk Resort, where we got to sleep in a nice grass area next to a golf course.

2012-366 Day 110 – Ragnar Checklist

Watch me start the latest trend in blogging, the blog checklist! Since I have to do it anyway and it might give you a little insight into what I’m stepping into the next two days I’m presenting my checklist of equipment for the Ragnar Relay here, with a little commentary on the items included. The basic list I am lifting from the main Ragnar page, with personal additions as well. Let’s see what we have here.

[ ] Headlamp – Safety gear we are required to wear between 7pm and 7am, I bought my own when they had a deal on Woot after my first relay just so no one else had to share my sweat. I’m pretty sure they really appreciate it.
[ ] Reflective Vest – Everyone needs to have one, mine will be making its third appearance.
[ ] LED Tail light – More safety, again I bought my own (it was pretty cheap) so no one else has to touch it.
[ ] Pillow – For the four or five hours of sleep I tend to get on these things.
[ ] Sleeping Bag – Ditto, though I tend to sleep in the van so I could probably just get away with a blanket, but the sleeping bag I have rolls up pretty compact.
[ ] Snacks – Yay, food! We do stop for meals along the way, but it’s good to have back up for mid-van drive snack attacks. Salty and sweet, so we’ll see what looks good at the store.
[ ] Sports Beans – My preferred long distance carb source, Jelly Belly makes what essentially amounts to Gatorade in a jelly bean. Got me through my previous half marathon and marathon, will trust them to do the same for me here.
[ ] Water – Oh bottled water, how I love thee on these things. It was not having time to grab a bottle of water that almost did me in last year on my last leg. Won’t make that mistake again.
[ ] Energy Bars – Hopefully I can find my standard Snickers Marathon bars, but they’ve become less frequent in these parts so I may have to find a substitute.
[ ] Cash – Yup, have to hit the bank beforehand.
[ ] Jacket – Probably less necessary this year than the last ones, it’s supposed to be warm this year. But that does remind me . . .
[ ] New Warmup – Because the cat adopted my old one as a seat cushion and, even if I washed it, it would probably set off anyone’s cat allergies at this point. Yay clothes shopping! (Wait . . .)
[ ] Sweat Pants – Just in case.
[ ] Three pairs of shorts – Yeah, we’re going to exceed Ragnar’s estimates here.
[ ] Six shirts – And just plain double them here.
[ ] Undies – You do not need to know how many pairs of underwear I am taking, we’ll just draw that line right here.
[ ] Socks – Ditto socks, this one more because I know you really don’t care.
[ ] Toothbrush and Toothpaste – Umm, well, probably.
[ ] Running shoes – I believe this falls into the “duh” category.
[ ] Comfortable shoes – Which for me is likely my old pair of running shoes.
[ ] Medications – Guessing just pain relievers here.
[ ] Large Ziploc bags – I mean the really big ones to house my running gear AFTER I’ve run in it.
[ ] Laptop – Actually need this for work (teaching) purposes, otherwise I’d leave it at home.
[ ] Laptop Charger – Because it is an old laptop and thus the battery sucks.
[ ] Phone – So many practical and impractical uses on a trip like this.
[ ] Phone Charger – Because using it for all those uses takes up a lot of juice.
[ ] Car Power Strip – So everyone can share the juice, this is actually a nice one I picked up I don’t know where that actually powered a drill (haltingly) when I needed to put a door knob on our storage unit that was outside, nowhere near a power outlet.
[ ] iPod – I need my music when I go on distance runs, it helps distract from the fact that I’m a 230 pound man going on a distance run.
[ ] iPod Cable – I don’t think I’ll run it all the way down, but can’t be too careful.
[ ] Garmin Watch – Just to see if they’re lying to me about the distances I’m running. I can also see how far I’ve gone and how much I have left.
[ ] Hat – For daytime running.
[ ] Sunscreen – Ditto.
[ ] Sunglasses – Also ditto. (Wait, how redundant is that?)

That’s all I can think of for now. Hopefully I’ll be able to cram all of that into a fairly reasonable space, since five other people and a driver all have to make their stuff fit into one vehicle along with mine. I’m off for the initial shopping trip now, but I’m certain there will be at least one more, plus whatever I pick up on the way. If I’m forgetting anything, drop me a line in the comments before tomorrow (or afterwards if you just want to rub it in).

2012-366 Day 109 – Ragnar Relay

Down to nearly 36 hours before I depart for my yearly running adventure. I originally explained it on Day 48, but I’ll save you the trouble and quote myself here:

“In the meantime, I’m heading back out to train so that I’m ready for April’s Ragnar Relay So Cal, my absolute favorite race, for the third straight year. I’ll try to get the technology set up so that I can live blog it this year (although I always tend to fall asleep sometime in the middle of day two, so there may be a little lag in there). For those I haven’t told about it before, the Ragnar Relay is a 200 mile(ish) relay race where 12 people (or a crazy 6 people) split over two vans take turns running 36 legs (each runner gets three legs, so the first runner would run legs 1, 13, and 25 while the last runner runs legs 12, 24, and 36, and each leg ranges from 3 to 9 miles). While one van is on the course, the other van moves down the line and gets whatever rest they can. It is an absolute blast (although I’d imagine you mileage would vary if you had bad van-mates, but I’ve yet to have that happen), and the physical challenge coupled with the camaraderie and sense of accomplishment at the end makes for an incredible two days. It’s a running experience I look forward to without the hint of dread that half and full marathons dredge up.”

A bit of an update to the above: 1) I probably won’t be live blogging it in the traditional sense of updating here. What I’ll do instead is set up two dummy pages that will go up while I’m gone and I’ll update on Facebook. Then when all is said and done, I’ll copy the Facebook updates onto the dummy page. That way people only have to check for the updates in one place (and honestly probably where the vast majority of people will see it anyway) but it can then be saved in one place on the blog afterwards. 2) Well, the hint of dread thing was true at the time. As leg assignments shook out and the final course revisions were made my assignment grew from 5 miles, 4 miles, and 8 miles (tough, yes, but doable) to a grueling 5 miles, 4 miles, 11 miles (notice the slight difference there?). Yes, my final leg is pretty darn close to a half-marathon by itself and is the longest individual leg in the entire race. So my hint of dread has infected this race too. That being said, I look forward to the experience once again and am sure it be a blast again.

I also figure since it’s my last leg if I just can’t go anymore someone else can finish it up for me under the injured runner rule. We’ll try not to invoke that one though . . .

And for those that want to look at the legs on the website above and know which one’s I’m doing, I’m runner number 9. Much more to come this weekend!

2012-366 Day 108 – Fun with Excel

Someone sent me a question on making a schedule/standings in Excel and I spent a bit too long on the answer. So, rather than only sharing with one person, I’ll share with seven (or so, we’ll go with the average). Here’s the sample file for you to play with too: standings.

Columns: Week, Game #, Team, Score, Pt Diff, Games Won
Week is just the label for the week on the schedule. Each week has the games going down vertically, with as much space as you like between them and between weeks.
Game # was just used for the softball schedule (1, 2, or 3) to indicate game time.
Team is obviously the team name. The important part here is to always use the same team name for the same team throughout the schedule, as we’ll be referencing it later. We had the home team in the first row and visitor in the second, but either way will work.
Score is where the score is placed, each team’s score on the appropriate row.
Pt Diff automatically calculates the Run Differential with the excel formula =D2-D3 for the first team and =D3-D2 for the second team (obviously this will change for each team going down, but you can copy and paste the formula or drag down for a fill and it will automatically adjust the rows for you).
Games Won automatically calculates who won or lost and puts a 1 next to the winner and 0 next to the loser (we’ll use this to tally up the standings later). The formula here is =IF(D2>D3,1,0) for the first row and =IF(D3-D2,1,0) for the second row. Again you can copy and paste or fill down.

This seems a lot more complicated than it is, as it is mostly a bunch of set up. Everything is automated once it’s in place.

Repeat down for the entire schedule.

The last thing is the actual standings table. The only thing you’ll have to do manually is sort it once you’ve put in new information. The standings table has 4 columns (5 and some adjustments if you allow ties): Team, W, L, Pt Diff
Team is the same team name used above, just list them down, each getting their own row.
W is the number of wins and is calculated for each team by the excel formula =SUMIF(C$2:F$80,A85,F$2:F$81) which basically takes the whole schedule (above), looks for the current team name (A85 or wherever your the team name for the standing table ends up, you could also hard code this as Team 1 or whatever), and then adds up the number of wins in the Games Won column that match that team name.
L is the losses which is found by taking the number of games played (from a fixed cell at the bottom of the sheet, in this case $B$98) and subtracting the number of wins from that. If you have a schedule where teams play on different days, this may need to be hard coded for each team.
Pt Diff keeps track of season long point differential using the same mechanism as wins. Excel formula =SUMIF(C$2:E$80,A85,E$2:E$80)

I’ve included a sample worksheet for you to play around with (a currentish version of Microsoft Excel required), hopefully it makes everything clear. Also, it looks like I automated the Games Played section, you can just change that to a flat number if it works better.

2012-366 Day 107 – Chipotle

Despite the fact that there is a wide variety of food chains located right around campus (including our favorite Mexican place, Senor Sol), I generally find myself defaulting to Chipotle when I don’t want to think to much about it. Why? Well I’ll give you a few reasons:

1. I can order online and set a time for pickup. So if I decide around 11 I can place the order for 1:05 and know that I can leave at 1 and it will be ready when I arrive, I won’t have to stand in line, and I’ve already paid online.

2. My standard meal is pretty filling and actually fairly healthy (I could make it more healthy with one change, but I like what I’ve got going). A Barbacoa bowl with no rice, black beans, corn and green salsa, and cheese comes out to about 485 calories (385 without cheese), 18g of fat (could be cut in half without cheese, but I like cheese), 43g of carbs, and 43g of protein (and no cheese would drop this to 35 g). Sodium is fairly high, but I don’t add any salt to my diet and drink a lot, so it’s less of an issue. (Data compiled using the ChipotleFan.com calculator.)

3. This one time (today) I ran into a really pretty girl in line who was also on her lunch break. I gave her a ride back to campus and we’re going to meet up after work. (Yeah, Jess and I independently went to the same place for lunch at the same time.)

4. As long as I time it so that it’s not between classes, I can make it there and back again in less than 15 minutes.

So there’s a brief ad for Chipotle in my blog. I probably should have tried to get it sponsored since, you know, they didn’t actually pay me anything to say this. Anyway, a little more insight into the inscrutable (okay, pretty scrutable) puzzle that is me.

2012-366 Day 106 – Soccer Game 6

Second to last game, barring a miracle of everyone winning/losing just right so we can make the playoffs, and we’re playing the two teams that are down around our position in the standings (which before today was last). We got an early goal from one of our women, but that was matched by a goal from one of theirs where I left my feet and the ball just dribbled across to them and I couldn’t quite crawl back to get it (this seems to happen once a game). I did have my first screened reaction save, where I saw that they kicked the ball but it then disappeared between a mass of players and only popped out when someone moved their head at the last second. It was all I could do to get my hand up in the Karate Kid “wax on, wax off” motion to deflect it away before it went over my shoulder. I only let in the one goal for the first half, however, and we entered half time with either a 6-2 or 8-2 lead.

The field we play on faces East-West, so the early games have to deal with the setting sun when you are defending the eastern goal. That was the goal I was defending in the second half, and it was pretty brutal (we’ve had some early games the weeks before, so I’d played in it before, but it was nasty). Thankfully the defenders did a good job keeping it out of the middle and so I mostly had to deal with shots from the wing, which were a lot easier to see. One of the women got it deep in the wing and uncorked a pretty good shot on me from about 10 feet away and I didn’t even have time to put my hand up this time. I just Supermaned it off my chest and shoulder back out past her where it was swept up by my team. Our team kept up the pressure even though the other team played the vast majority of the game with an extra player and just kept scoring. One of their guys put a late goal past me in the bottom corner of the net and one of their women scored with 8 seconds left to provide the final margin, 13-5.

I did notice the other team dragging a lot in the second half and looked over to see that there was no one on their bench. I asked one of the players afterwards, “You didn’t have any subs, did you?” I received a dejected, “No” in reply. That certainly helped our side and definitely made playing the second half a bit easier.

The really cool thing about tonight is that both Jess and my parents came out to watch the game and we got the win. I couldn’t see them for half the game, but, then again, I couldn’t see anything for half the game. Another funny thing is that it turns out that one of the women on our team is the daughter of one of the teachers who used to teach where my dad teaches (did you follow that?). They caught up for a bit after the game and it was funny to have such a blast from the past which I didn’t even realize through the previous five games.

One more game next week against the team that was right above us in the standings going into this week, provided I survive Ragnar.
