2012-366 Day 106 – Soccer Game 6

Second to last game, barring a miracle of everyone winning/losing just right so we can make the playoffs, and we’re playing the two teams that are down around our position in the standings (which before today was last). We got an early goal from one of our women, but that was matched by a goal from one of theirs where I left my feet and the ball just dribbled across to them and I couldn’t quite crawl back to get it (this seems to happen once a game). I did have my first screened reaction save, where I saw that they kicked the ball but it then disappeared between a mass of players and only popped out when someone moved their head at the last second. It was all I could do to get my hand up in the Karate Kid “wax on, wax off” motion to deflect it away before it went over my shoulder. I only let in the one goal for the first half, however, and we entered half time with either a 6-2 or 8-2 lead.

The field we play on faces East-West, so the early games have to deal with the setting sun when you are defending the eastern goal. That was the goal I was defending in the second half, and it was pretty brutal (we’ve had some early games the weeks before, so I’d played in it before, but it was nasty). Thankfully the defenders did a good job keeping it out of the middle and so I mostly had to deal with shots from the wing, which were a lot easier to see. One of the women got it deep in the wing and uncorked a pretty good shot on me from about 10 feet away and I didn’t even have time to put my hand up this time. I just Supermaned it off my chest and shoulder back out past her where it was swept up by my team. Our team kept up the pressure even though the other team played the vast majority of the game with an extra player and just kept scoring. One of their guys put a late goal past me in the bottom corner of the net and one of their women scored with 8 seconds left to provide the final margin, 13-5.

I did notice the other team dragging a lot in the second half and looked over to see that there was no one on their bench. I asked one of the players afterwards, “You didn’t have any subs, did you?” I received a dejected, “No” in reply. That certainly helped our side and definitely made playing the second half a bit easier.

The really cool thing about tonight is that both Jess and my parents came out to watch the game and we got the win. I couldn’t see them for half the game, but, then again, I couldn’t see anything for half the game. Another funny thing is that it turns out that one of the women on our team is the daughter of one of the teachers who used to teach where my dad teaches (did you follow that?). They caught up for a bit after the game and it was funny to have such a blast from the past which I didn’t even realize through the previous five games.

One more game next week against the team that was right above us in the standings going into this week, provided I survive Ragnar.
