2012-366 Day 254 – Random Topics

It’s been a fairly quiet Monday so far, and I just have some random things that I want to address without doing full blog posts on them (yet, I’m sure, for some). Of course, now that I’ve typed that, I’ve forgotten half of them. Let’s see if some writing will jog them loose.

First off, I’m getting my Green belt tonight! Yay! Only two colors away from Black. Of course, those two contain sub colors, so it’s actually five belts (Green, Green Black, Green Red, Red, Red Black) and almost two years. But hey, if it was easy, why bother?

My mile and a half test last week as well as a couple of workouts a month or two ago have gotten a bit of the speed bug back into my system, at least for shorter distances. I’m starting to add interval training to my workouts for speed, with the goal of hitting a sub-eight minute mile when I do my exit testing for my fitness class in December. Considering I ran two miles today in sub-nine minutes average while alternating fast and slow laps (until the last half mile where I did one and a half out of the four at speed), it’s a promising start.

My missing time at the Disneyland Half Marathon apparently is bothering me more than I let on, as I’m writing them an email to see what can be done. I guess just having the medal and satisfaction of finishing isn’t enough for me when the internet and searchable databases are involved. I’ll let you know what happens.

Had a nice time last night with Jess, my parents, my Grandma (Mom’s Mom), and my sister and her husband Kenny at Marie Calendar’s for some pie, since my Mom and Grandma are going back east for ten days. Jess and I will have to make our way back to Maine one day, I hear it’s lovely. So many different places to go, and so little vacation time and money to do it.

Nice, just thought of my post for tomorrow and fired up a draft to write it down the idea. A nice bonus to doing this random post.

TobyMac (originally from the band of my childhood, dcTalk) released his latest album “Eye On It” last week (which, of course, I had to immediately pick up, and with some mp3 credits I had saved up I was able to do so for a buck) and became only the third overtly Christian album to top the Billboard 200 chart (and the other two happened in 1997 – Bob Carlisle’s “Butterfly Kisses” and LeAnn Rimes’ “You Light Up My Life – Inspirational Songs” if you’re curious). That’s really just a sidelight to my observation: I’m keenly enjoying the fact that one of my favorite songs on the album is titled “Favorite Song.” Good on you TobyMac.

Well, if I forgot any topics I wanted to touch on, I’ll just have to give them their own Random Updates post.

2012-366 Day 253 – Disneyland III

So if you could follow my somewhat temporally confusing entry in the Weekend Wrap Up yesterday, you know that I was taking Jess to Disneyland today for the morning and afternoon (the evening was dedicated to seeing my Mom and Grandma before they head off to the Northeast tomorrow, but it was a surprise so I didn’t mention it until now, when it’s no longer a surprise since it has already happened). This was the only off Sunday between sports leagues, and our passes were good (unlike after the marathon). So we set off this morning to get there a little after the park opened (Jess let me sleep in a little bit), and arrived at the park along with hundreds of other people a little before 10 am.

The day did not start promisingly as we tried to go to the Carnation Cafe for breakfast (which they served until 11 am, that part we checked), but were told that they were only taking people with reservations for the remainder of their breakfast servings. Since I hadn’t thought to make a reservation, we were out of luck. We then headed into Adventureland looking for Mickey Waffles, but all they had were Mickey Pancakes, which obviously aren’t the same. I needed to eat something by this point, so we went back to the Jolly Holiday bakery and I got a croissant and danish, while Jess got a quiche and bit by a duck.

Oh wait, I have to explain that last bit, don’t I? An adolescent duck came squeaking over and Jess deemed it “cute”, so she started giving it pieces of my leftover danish. This was all well and good until an older duck came over and wanted some too (it got some because it asked nicely). Now having to keep track of two ducks, Jess tried to give another piece of danish to the younger duck and had it stick to her finger, which promptly got bit. Luckily ducks don’t have teeth, I suppose. After washing up, we visited the stores while heading back to the start of Main Street to inquire about the availability of the Lilly Belle (it was, of course, booked) and to acquire Jess a birthday button, since we were celebrating it belatedly.

We checked out the new castle exhibit up front and then asked about the next Voices of Liberty (an acapella group on loan from Disney World that does old time patriotic songs dressed in period style) show, and found it was about forty minutes away. We went to the New Orleans shops until it was showtime, but upon returning found out that they started with a number outside before kicking off the Lincoln show. The number outside satisfied our curiosity, and with a limited time frame, we decided to move on. We headed up to Tomorrowland to ride Buzz Lightyear (neither of us did very well), and then Jess went on Space Mountain while I wandered a bit.

We decided to switch over to California Adventure (since, you know, it’s actually worth visiting now), and on the way out were distracted by the Dapper Dans performing on Main Street. Jess paused a bit too long with her shiny birthday button, as, after they finished their song, one walked up to her and whisked her to the middle of the group. Me, being the caring husband I am, did a quick headcount and figured, “hey, there’s few enough people here she’ll be fine.” It was only a quarter of the way into the song that I realized, “oh, I should probably take a picture of this.” When one of the Dans asked her how old she was, he was quickly admonished by the other Dans for asking an inappropriate question. Properly chagrined, they asked instead how much she weighed. Musically, of course. After our little show, we headed over to the newly refurbished park.

After checking if they had any new Oswald stuff, we took in a little bit of the newsies at the end of Buena Vista before heading to the Carthay Restaurant to see if they had room for us at lunch. They told us to check back later, so we headed to Cars Land for a refreshing Pomegranate Limeade and some AC in the Curio shop. Jess wanted to ride California Screaming, so we walked to the Pier and she went on while I found a spot that I could actually upload the Dapper Dan photo to Facebook. Sadly, Sprint service sucks so bad in the park that it actually took the entire time she was gone to do it.

We went back to Carthay and they had a table for us after a short wait. As a fancy new Disney restaurant, the place lived up to most of its hype, with Jess having pasta that was the best she ever had. We got cheese, bacon, and jalapeno stuffed biscuits (that were more balls) that were amazing, and my burger was very good as well (accompanied by a personal top two all-time set of fries). We were both quite full, and, while being a little pricey, could certainly see where the money went in quality and presentation.

As we finished, it was nearing time for us to head back in case there was traffic, so we made a last minute shopping run and hit the trams back to the parking structure. A fun day with some great memories, and a fitting birthday celebration for Jess.

2012-366 Day 252 – Weekend Wrap Up XVIII

Probably best that I didn’t bill these as Weekly Weekend Wrap Ups, but with the sick days from the previous week, I didn’t have much to expand on anyway. I have updates both on Karate and Running, but I’ll give them in the appropriate space below. Sorry, you’ll just have to read on.

Sunday (8/26) – Birthday and Volleyball: With last Sunday (9/2) dedicated to the Half Marathon and next Sunday (9/16) being the start of Softball season (although in only pickup game fashion, as the church is having a kickoff with food trucks that we’re scheduling around), we’re belatedly celebrating Jess’ birthday (since she gave it up for Volleyball) at Disneyland tomorrow. Disney wasn’t letting us in the park after the Half Marathon without paying an arm and a leg, so we’re going on a day when our passes our good for the morning and afternoon.

Monday (8/27) – Allergies: You know, one day I’ll take the test and see what I’m actually allergic too, but I just haven’t found the time to study for it yet.

Tuesday (8/28) – Sick Day II: Oddly enough, I find that running helps my immune system (to the point that I will occasionally run during a mild cold or the last stages of a bigger one to “sweat it out of my system”). Perhaps my resolution to run, despite not being quite the volume I forecast, has helped me stay upright for most of the year.

Wednesday (8/29) – Sick Day III: Two days in a row. Shameful. I apologize.

Thursday (8/30) – The Survivor: Really need to start reading books more regularly again. I read on the internet all the time, articles on all sorts of things, but there’s still a particular satisfaction to reading a book.

Friday (8/31) – Teaching IV: The Summer went very quickly, and it’s a little weird to be teaching already. Now that I think about it, with two fifteen week semesters, and the occasional holiday, I probably only teach for a little over half of the 52 weeks of the year. Which is interesting, because it certainly feels closer to three quarters.

Saturday (9/1) – Resolution Update: It feels really good to be progressing faster on my weight loss goal, which I really needed to do since we’re over two thirds of the way through the year.

Sunday (9/2) – Disneyland Half Marathon: Woo. I’m still tired, but slowly getting back into running. One more half marathon before the end of the year, the L.A. Rock and Roll Half Marathon on October 28th. Planning on pacing myself, but also seeing if I can beat my P.R. Well see if my two goals can coexist.

Monday (9/3) – Karate VI: Ah, here’s the appropriate spot for my Karate update: I passed my Green belt (6th Gup) test! The new schedule for Green belt testing puts my next test (5th Gup) at the beginning of January (four months instead of two) which will put me a week behind schedule for my resolution, but close enough.

Tuesday (9/4) – Recovery II: Did my first longer distance run (slowly) tonight for five miles, and, outside of the humidity, did okay. Ready to start ramping back up again.

Wednesday (9/5) – Softball: Practice today knocked some of the rust off, still need to get to a batting cage.

Thursday (9/6) – Trifecta: Ah, the other update. I mentioned that I was trying to average under nine minutes on the mile and a half test I was doing after work. It was warm, and I wasn’t feeling all that loose, but I also had several people running with me so I had incentive. An incentive that apparently worked, because I nailed it, actually running an 8:14 average mile. I might be able to get into the sevens by the end of the semester after all.

Friday (9/7) – Teaching V: Two teaching topics in two weeks? Yup, it’s a new semester.

2012-366 Day 251 – Teaching V

Week two of class, and things felt a lot better. Trying to get a feel for the class the first week is always an interesting proposition, and this class was pretty quiet. They loosened up a bit today (I still had to tell them that it was okay for them to talk to each other during the break. Fifteen minutes of dead silence with everyone looking at their respective phones, laptops, or notes was pretty funny though.), and I got to use one of my favorite demonstrations which uses note cards and the entire class to simulate a distributed network like the Internet. I also added a new piece to the class, finding an old Macintosh commercial to supplement the section on metaphors and computing.

As I said in class, one can always count on old computer commercials for unintentional comedy. Since it was so old, it didn’t have captioning, which was a problem since I have some students which would benefit from it. I transcribed it myself, but also noticed that Youtube has an auto-captioning button on the bottom (it looks like a menu). After seeing it in action, however, I used the opportunity to show that this kind of technology is still a work in progress (60-70% correct is still a LONG way off).

Overall I think things went well, and I’m still looking for more things to add to the class to help the students. Next week we go to the library, and then, after the lecture, it’s time to give them my famous internet scavenger hunt.

2012-366 Day 250 – Trifecta

I call it the Trifecta, and it seems to be pretty rare around these parts (CSUN). One accomplishes the Trifecta by being a staff member, faculty member, and student all at the same time (and, since I’m making up the rules here, all at the same school). The last time I accomplished this I was a grad student teaching the labs for an introduction to Java programming, taking classes towards my MS, and working as a casual worker in Education (which meant I worked hourly instead of having a full-time job). What a difference eight years makes, huh? I’m now teaching the upper division introduction to computers class, taking a health and wellness class (mainly so I have access to the student gym and can run on the indoor track when it’s hot, but hey, if it get’s me some time in the weight room too, good for me), and have my full time job as a second level IT guy in Admissions and Records. It also means that my management page in the campus web system has A LOT of different tabs on it. I enjoy, and even take pride in, being involved in multiple facets at the school.

Going back to yesterday, I forgot an additional Softball related item. I have once again been recruited to play for the Psychology department (after they apparently acquired a “Spousal Ringer Exception” on my behalf) when they play one of the other departments in the upcoming weeks. We actually have a practice scheduled for this Saturday (how fancy). Looks like I’ll get to knock the rust off sooner than later.

Speaking of my health and fitness class, I have to go run a mile for time (actually a mile and a half) for the first time since high school today. Going to be a bit warm and humid, but we’ll see if I can’t break a nine minute mile (I was around the eight minute mark on my fast runs the last time I did a half-marathon three years ago, hopefully I can get back down there). Some of you might remember a couple months ago that this class was supposed to be forensic anthropology. That got scuttled when we got the syllabus from the professor a week beforehand and the class featured a major public speaking component. Not a worry for me, but not something that the person taking the class with me wanted to do, so we both ducked out. I’m actually happier with how it turned out, and I’m looking forward to seeing results.

Huh, there you go, a Trifecta topic with three topics inside it (this doesn’t count). Sometimes it must actually seem like I know what I’m doing.

2012-366 Day 249 – Softball

It is just about that time of year again, what will be (for now) our last Fall Rocky Peak Sports Softball season (the league is moving to the Summer next year). With the success of our playoff tournament out in Simi Valley last year (after a series of rainouts at our normal field), we are looking to incorporate that as a regular feature (and potentially for special events as well). There’s still a bit of time before the league starts (Sept 16th), so if you haven’t signed up yet and want to play, do so.

In other softball news, the Dodger Blog Tournament I played in is having a Fall edition (to complement the Spring one I played in) at the end of September, and I’ve already signed up to play for my old team. We’ll see how many people come back (we’re already not going to have our coach back), and see what the make up of the team is. It was a lot of fun last time, although getting out there may be a challenge (it’s the same weekend as Carmaggedon II).

All this reminds me, I have to get out to a batting cage soon and knock the rust off. Probably next week after I finish up with the next Karate test on Saturday. I will, of course, keep you all updated.

2012-366 Day 248 – Recovery II

Hmm, the last time I used this title it was from a karate test and a grilled cheese binge. Feeling a bit more justified about using it this time. The problem with running a race that starts at 5:45 in the morning is that it really screws with your sleep cycle if you are a night person. The extra day off for Labor Day helped, but sleeping in yesterday led to me only getting about four hours of sleep when I had to get up at the normal time this morning. I actually feel pretty awake right now (although a shot of caffeine did help that, it really is more effective when you use it as a patch and not a constant thing), but am expecting to crash early tonight.

Physically I’m doing alright, although I was surprised to find that my sorest spot the last two days has been my hips. Not sure which aspect of running a half-marathon irritated them so. My guess would have to be either bouncing side to side to go around people, or walking around bow-legged for the rest of the day with the chaffing. Anyhow, like all good distance runs, time is improving the memories, and the pain that fades is the first memory to get jettisoned.

Looking at the results posted, apparently my tag didn’t register at the finish. 🙁 There were, however, plenty of pictures out there and even a couple of me crossing the finish line, so, between that and the medal, I at least know I did it. Speaking pictures, here’s the medal:

And here’s the links to the official pictures:

Although I actually show up in the background of Belen’s pictures more often, and have four videos on her page. (WARNING: The videos autoplay when you go to the page.)

2012-366 Day 247 – Karate VI

Okay, owwwww. Not sure what I did yesterday that ticked off my hips so much (you know, other than run the half-marathon. I mean what did I do specifically?), but wow, are they sore. Been lying around a lot since we got home, although did go out to lunch and shopping today, so I’m still functional. I don’t remember being this sore before, although I’m sure I was.

What does that have to do with karate, you ask? Well, starting with this belt, we have to write an essay to go with our belt test. While some people might be intimidated by that assignment, one should probably gather by now that I’m okay with writing (yeah, just a little bit). So I got to flex my essay muscles (haven’t used those in a long time) on the topic of “What Qualities Should a Black Belt Have?” And of course I’m going to inflict it on you, because my brain is fried like the rest of my body. Enjoy.

A black belt does not come from a singular mold, nor does each black belt share exactly the same qualities. While it would be easy just to recite the tenets of Respect, Integrity, Self-control, Effort, Unity, and Perseverance, two qualities are more prominent in the black belt’s repertoire. Perseverance and self-control are crucial aspects for a successful black belt.

Perseverance is pervasive in a black belt, having followed them throughout the course of their training. Several years of study must be completed before obtaining their black belt, which is a symbol of constant evaluation, by both themselves and others, correction of a myriad of details, from significant to miniscule, and repetition of every maneuver, form, and one step. Persevering through this volume of work is essential in making the black belt perform at their best.

Self-control is another quality of the black belt that stands apart, as it ensures they use their abilities appropriately and for the benefit of themselves and others. Having learned many dangerous techniques, it is only through the proper application that the black belt shows they are worthy of their training. By using discernment, self-control shows the true heart and dedication of a black belt.

It is these two characteristics that are hallmarks of a great black belt, and they should be inculcated in all who walk through the doors of any serious martial arts studio. A true black belt will be honored for their perseverance and respected for their self-control. Together they form a strong core of success.

2012-366 Day 246 – Disneyland Half Marathon

Four thirty a.m. Thankfully we stayed in a hotel within a quarter to half mile of the starting line. With no illusions of setting any records, we were able to get there much closer to start time than recommended and thus able to avoid standing around for too long (45 minutes rather than two hours).

As I’ve mentioned before, my distance runs suffered in the heat of the summer, so I wasn’t expecting much more than to try to finish. One of our friends, Belen, also signed up to run for the first time, and has been suffering some shin problems, so I thought I’d try to help her to the finish line. We lined up at the very back of 17,000 people and waited for our turn to cross the starting line.

One of the great things about doing the same race for a second time (even if it is three years removed) is the familiarity. One of the things I remember about the Disney Half is how supportive it was and how many people were out cheering both in the park and out on the streets of Anaheim. Along with the people are some great signs, and we had an early favorite with “Worst Parade Ever” at the starting line.

Jess came with us to see us off and then filtered out with the crowd once Belen and I headed back into the queues. As we approached the starting line I think I heard her, but didn’t see her (she has video proving she was there). I knew her next stop was the Esplanade where I saw her last time, so I made sure to make a mental note to look for her there.

The first mile traces the streets outside of the park, so Belen and I decided to run it since there wasn’t much to look at there. We finished that mile in around twelve minutes and bought ourselves a bit of a cushion against the “Goofy Bus.” The “Goofy Bus” is our term for the Disney mandated minimum pace (16 minute miles), otherwise a shuttle (the Bus) picks you up and takes you back to the start line. Belen had some trepidation that she would be a victim of the “Bus,” so getting the first mile in with that bit of cushion helped.

The second mile brought us into California Adventure and included a run through Cars Land. We were back stage for the first part of it and saw the floats from the Pixar parade which we had never seen before, one for the Incredibles and one for Toy Story. They looked great, as did the rest of the park and characters throughout. We still ran most of the time, but threw in a couple walk breaks to make sure that Belen’s legs didn’t have too much too soon. This was the first of many times I was told to go without her, but I wasn’t going to do that.

We reached the Esplanade and saw Jess with the signs she made the previous day fairly quickly (Belen saw the sign first, I picked Jess out of the crowd before I saw the sign). We crossed into Disneyland and took a winding path through the park and out the north end onto Ball Road. Both California Adventure and Disneyland had plenty of cast members and characters out to cheer, as well as great locations like the Castle and plenty of interesting backstage locations like the stables for the Clydesdale horses. On the way out of the park at the four mile mark, we were informed by volunteers on a bike that we were 12 minutes ahead of minimum pace.

Once outside of the parks, there isn’t much to see until you get to the Honda Center and Angels Stadium. Unfortunately that takes you from mile 4 to mile 8 with just the streets and industrial areas. There were some great groups spread throughout, including mariachis, Hawaiian dancers, plenty of cheer squads, some dance teams, and even a bunch of classic and current cars in the last stretch to Honda Center, the only thing I didn’t really remember from last time.

At mile 5 we had upped our lead to 13 minutes ahead of pace, and we were no longer getting warnings after that. In fact, we hit the seven mile mark and I did some quick math in my head (since all the clocks show the initial start time, and we started about 45 minutes after that) and determined that we were actually on pace to finish in under 3 hours. That prospect excited both of us, and we decided to make that our goal.

My favorite part of the race the first time remained my favorite part the second time. After circling the Honda Center and taking a trail across to the outskirts of Angels Stadium, we got to head into the stadium and out onto the field (well, the warning track) and run from right field down past home plate and back out via left field. The most amazing part is that they let 500-1000 people into the stadium and you get to emerge from the insides of the stadium out to a bunch of cheering. The feeling is fantastic, and then you get to run around the field and see the runners on the big screen in the outfield. So much fun, and, as I said, so amazing.

Mile markers 10 through 12 take you back from Angels Stadium to Disneyland through some pretty uninspired industrial areas. We ran and walked off and on while I kept an eye on our time. The best sign on this stretch was a picture of McKayla Maroney with the simple subtitle, “McKayla is not impressed.” (Yes, we got trolled by an internet meme and cracked up at it. Unlike the sign around mile 4 that said, “If you’re walking, then you can’t say you ran it.” Untrue, and unnecessary.) Another great sign around mile 5 was a little kid holding one that said, “Mommy, Daddy said if you run under 3 hours I get an iPad.”

McKayla is not impressed

We counted down from 3.1 miles, to 2.1 miles, and hit the 12 mile marker with 1.1 miles to go and about sixteen minutes left before our time rolled over to three hours. Belen and I agreed to a good jog for the last mile and then to go all out for the last tenth. I knew adrenaline would carry us, and we had a real shot at breaking three hours if we kept it up. They had opened up California Adventure while we were out on the course, so, unlike the first time I ran the race, we didn’t get to go into the park on the way back and instead ran backstage one last time. We spotted our cheering squad (Jess and Eric) right before the finish and made it through to the end in 2:59.

Turns out that pacing with Belen this year only added 20 minutes to my time from the first time in which I ran nine and a half miles before crashing and run/walking the rest. Having someone to run with and talk to certainly made things more fun this time around too, and helping Belen accomplish her first half marathon was awesome. I’m not sure I’d run the race by myself again, there’s just too many dead zones and not enough time in the park (although the run through Angels Stadium certainly makes a compelling case for a return), but I’m glad to have done it again. I felt pretty good at the end, and, outside of some chaffing issues and stiffness, am doing alright now.

2012-366 Day 245 – Resolution Update

Starting September with a half marathon, so that’s something. Let’s see where the resolutions be at.

1) One blog post (long or short) every day this year. – Just past the two thirds mark and looking good. – On track.

2) Lose 20 pounds. – Back on track, keeping better track of what I eat and the half marathon ought to be a nice jump start. – On track.

3) Run 600 miles. – Not going to happen. The heat and business killed most of my long runs this last month, and not enough time left to make it up. I’ll try to break 400. – Behind.

4) Complete 5th Gup Green belt test by end of year. – 6th Gup test is in a week, so we’re doing well. – On track.

5) Complete first novel. – Not going to happen. – Behind.

Have to get up very early tomorrow, so I should think about going to bed.
