2012-366 Day 27 – Catch Up

A dad tomato and a son tomato are walking . . . never mind, that’s ketchup. (If you don’t know that joke, don’t ask, I promise you it’s not worth your time.)

I’ve covered a wide variety of topics this past month (although I’m currently working through my realization of the the scope of what I’m trying to do here, we’ve been through just over 7% of the year so far), and this weekend marks a milestone in one area (Karate), a culmination of another (Softball), and the beginning of a third (Soccer). So we’re going to take a quick stop and look at the status of these areas so when I update on them this weekend and next week, you have an idea of where I’m at.

Saturday morning I’ll be taking part in my first Karate tournament (inter-dojo). Our studio and its sister studio are putting on a competition between the schools, and I’ll be taking part in the Forms division and Sparring division. I have my form down to where I feel I’ll be competitive, but I definitely would feel more comfortable if I was further along in my weight loss goals to get things where they really should be, as that would help with balance and maneuvering (I’m on pace for the year though). I feel like I’ll be very competitive in the sparring despite the fact that I have only a little experience, as only one person in my belt range was able to consistently beat me, and they’re taller than I am and two belts ahead. I have plans for them though. . . We’ll see who the other school has to deal with, however. I should be able to update with the results tomorrow evening, it will be tomorrow’s post.

Sunday afternoon marks the long awaited completion of the softball season. In past years I have blogged about the season as it progressed, but I just could not get it going this season. We had six teams this year, with my team finishing third overall and second in our division (two divisions of three teams each). We started 3-1, but lost our last three games to end with a 3-4 record. We also lost all three games to the two teams above us in the standings. Throw that all out the window though, as none of the teams have played for two months, so it will truly come down to who can round back into shape the fastest. Any team could win this thing, and I don’t see why ours couldn’t be the one. I also believe that the first round bye will be a disadvantage, as the lower ranked teams will have a game of warm up under their belt. The tournament will be at the S-turns park (Rancho Santa Susana Park) in Simi Valley, with game times of 2 p.m., 3:30 p.m. and 5 p.m. for the championship. We play the Navy team in the first round and will move on to play the number one team should we win. Due to the tournament and the next entry, I wouldn’t anticipate an update on this one until Monday.

From there, hopefully after a successful tournament, I’ll have to hustle over to the soccer arena in Chatsworth to participate in the placement day for the soccer league (which starts at 7 p.m.). I’ll (hopefully) be pretty gassed at this point, but, since I have no soccer skills to speak of, my performance should be pretty indicative of my skill level. Then it will be time to go home and pass out.

I’m very much looking forward to this weekend, although I suppose I should rest at some point.

Nah. . .

2012-366 Day 26 – Teaching

So tomorrow at 8 a.m. I get to begin my third semester of shaping America’s college students. Have to be careful what I say, though, as last semester one of the students actually found this blog (obviously before I was doing the 2012-366 series). Actually, I’m not worried, as I always obey the number one rule of the internet: If you don’t want other people to know about it, don’t put it online (Anywhere! E-mails, IM, texts, someone else always has access to all of it).

I really enjoy teaching, as it combines two of my strengths (extemporaneous speaking and enlightening people). Long term I could see myself becoming a full time professor (or, maybe, a high school teacher, but that’s as far down as I’m willing to go). That would require me getting my doctorate though, and committing that much time and finances (I’m a little allergic to paying for school) at this point isn’t happening. I’m very happy to be teaching my one class a semester at this point, even if they keep moving it up in the day on Friday (my first semester I was originally offered the choice between an 8 a.m. session and a 12 p.m. session and of course picked the 12 p.m. session. The second semester they offered only one session that started at 11 a.m., and this semester there’s only one session starting at 8 a.m., so I guess I got there eventually). Seeing as a month ago it wasn’t even certain they’d be offering the class I teach, I’m certainly not going to complain (any more than I have here).

As I’ve mentioned before, teaching does play to my strengths. It certainly helps that, for whatever reason, I have absolutely NO problem talking in front of groups (although I suppose that’s pretty much a pre-requisite for teachers in general). Another thing that makes the current class I teach entertaining is the subject matter: basically an upper division introduction to computers. A subject that I know so well, it is extremely easy for me cover any topic in the class in any depth, depending on the questions thrown at me. When I taught some programming classes at CoC, there were occasions where someone would ask a questions and we’d have to go look it up together, as I was switching between languages at the time and some programming information is just obscure (not that there’s anything wrong with admitting you don’t know everything, I know I certainly don’t, but it does break up the class flow a little bit). The current difficulty is remembering what stories I’ve told to what class over the past year.

I have a bit of preparation left to do, so I’ll leave this here (I’m sure I’ll come back to it in the future). In short, very much looking forward to another great semester!

2012-366 Day 25 – Short Story

Just exercising my creative writing muscles, you can read if interested or move along.

Aldrich looked over at the neatly stacked armor in the corner. Though he had been long adjusted to hefting his plate armor on many journeys over hundreds of miles, there was always a noticeable lightness whenever he got a chance to take it off. The room at the inn pressed in on him a bit, as it had been designed for a species with a slightly smaller average height. While the armor could stay in the corner, his shield and sword rested propped up next to his head, ready to be borne at a moment’s notice, as one could never be too careful.

The trip to the village had been uneventful, taking most of the day. He did not know much about his travelling companions, they had recently recruited him back in town. Out of the five members of the party, only one or two had even been to this area (although apparently they had accomplished great deeds here, as they were welcomed back with open arms). Upon arrival, they headed directly to the Mayor’s manor and had a quick discussion with him. Aldrich himself said little, his place was not to negotiate, merely to get any pertinent details. The Mayor merely confirmed the original missive, that a band of Goblins had been terrorizing the area, and the village was looking for someone to deal with them.

The party had arrived in the village in the early evening, so it was decided that they would stay in the village and go looking for the Goblins in the morning. Three people in the party opted for rooms in the inn, while one person stayed in the manor, and the final party member decided to sleep in the park, owing to his vow of asceticism. Aldrich was one of the members in the inn, not wanting to be a burden on the Mayor or his staff. After a generous dinner provided by his hosts, he retired to the bedroom and prepared to get some rest before embarking on the next day’s quest. With equipment removed, arrayed, and in place, he said his prayers and then closed his eyes to get some fitful rest.

A loud crash from outside his room jolted Aldrich from his sleep, and he barely was able to focus his eyes before realizing that two Goblins stood by the side of his bed, weapons at the ready. They swiped at him, barely connecting as he rolled his lower half away while grasping for his sword. Securing it’s handle, Aldrich drew it and drove it in a deft slash at the nearest Goblin, who raised is blade in attempt to parry the blow.

The Goblin was nowhere near quick enough, the blade striking deep and true, dropping the creature to the ground from whence it would never rise. Aldrich jumped to his feet, the remaining Goblin swiping again and again barely connecting with a blow that would have glanced off the armor that was usually in place. Aldrich spared a glance at the doorway and saw that one of his compatriots had not had the chance to fight back, with two Goblins in their room attempting to do. . . something. Another swipe from the Goblin in the room, this one easily parried. A mighty blow from the Paladin felled the second Goblin where it stood, Aldrich jumped over their prone forms and headed to the doorway, arriving just in time to see the two Goblins from the other room attempting to carry his traveling companion towards the stairs leading out of the inn.

The creatures plan suddenly seemed to emerge from Aldrich’s sleep fogged mind, it seems as though the Goblins were sent to capture the raiding party before before they had a chance to even start their task. Another strong blow nearly cleaved the closest Goblin in two, causing the final Goblin to stumble under the suddenly doubled load. Aldrich quickly spared a glance at their third party member’s room and saw the door opened, with a giant creature already slain, but no trace of the summoner. The Goblin dropped his captive, whirled and landed a solid blow in the confined hallway, but it was not nearly enough to incapacitate the Paladin. A final sword strike eliminated the remaining threat, and Aldrich knelt next to his unconscious comrade and healed some of the damage with a quick word and touch.

The party prepared for the trip to where the Goblin base was purported to be. Regrouping after the capture attempt, Aldrich’s suspicions were confirmed, the large creature and eight Goblins had silently made their way into the village that night to capture the party. Had their ascetic friend not been sleeping outside and been awakened by the approach, it was quite possible that only one party member would have been left, as the Mayor’s manor was on the other side of the village and unlikely to have been a target. This led to several questions: How did they know the party was there? Who coordinated this strike? Did this somehow fit into a larger plan?

Aldrich knew one thing; he was anxious to get some answers, and the story was far from over.

2012-366 Day 24 – TV Shows I

Since I know that I’ll revisit this one, I’ll go ahead and append the I ahead of time. For this time, we’re going to discuss some of the shows that I currently enjoy. We watch pretty much all of our TV time shifted by DVR, so I only have a vague idea when these shows are actually on.

Community: This one is on hiatus, hopefully to return in the fall. I really like the quirky attitude and the combination of characters, as well as the “themed” episodes (the two paintball episodes, one a War movie, and the other a Western, were particularly well done). The way they’ve brought everyone together as a sort of (er, very) dysfunctional “family” over the seasons has been particularly nice to watch.

Once Upon a Time: A relative newbie, this show is only 8 or so episodes in, but the depth of the story and expanse they’ve covered has been impressive. While the overarching mystery is well done, covering the fairy tale characters trapped in a small town, it is the “character” stories that have been particularly well done (Jiminy Cricket, Rumplestiltskin, and Hansel and Gretel have had their own episodes, essentially). They also picked an excellent evil queen, as I want to smack the smirk off her face whenever I see her on screen.

Big Bang Theory: Wish I could say I was in on this one since the beginning, but a season had passed before Stephen told me I needed to start watching it. Consistently funny, although I fear they might be running out of steam (but seeing as they just aired episode 100, can be expected). I do particularly enjoy any Sheldon-Penny interactions, and I’ve finally stopped referring to Amy Farrah Fowler as Amy Farrah Fawcett Fowler.

Person of Interest: Another new show, this one takes an interesting premise (there’s a government computer watching all of us and knows when something bad will happen, but only gives the SSN of one person involved) and adds an interesting character (Jesus . . . I mean, Jim Caviezel) for a whole lot of sleuthing and shooting (seriously, does no one in this fictional New York report gunfire?). There’s other people in the show too, but do they really hold a candle to the indestructible, omni-talented monkish figure with guns?

The Middle: Solid, workman-like comedy about a solid, workman-like family, usually good for several laughs. Another show that I really like the characters in. I believe it appeals to my Midwestern ancestry, despite the fact that I’ve never been to the Midwest.

These are a few of the shows I watch, in no particular order. No, I do not watch “reality” TV, I may rant on why in another post.

2012-366 Day 23 – Rain

Today marks our first significant rain storm of the year (actually since last November, much to the chagrin of our softball league), and if there’s one thing I’m a fan of, it’s a big rainstorm (as long as I don’t have any sporting events scheduled). Perhaps it’s due to scarcity (having lived in Southern California all my life), but I have always enjoyed the rain. There’s something about the symbolic washing away that a hard rain brings that really appeals to me. I suppose that if the area got it all the time like the Pacific Northwest I might sour upon the idea, but I find that hard to believe since I have such a visceral reaction to it.

I don’t own an umbrella. Granted, that’s probably less unusual in this area, but it’s a choice on my part (I believe that hair is nature’s umbrella. Uh, so I guess that if you don’t have any then . . . you know what, never mind, abort metaphor!). There is just something for me where I’m standing in the rain, particularly the heavy, driving kind we get oh so rarely, that just feels like my body is being refilled. I feel it especially powerfully those times where I’ve been out in nature during a good storm, watching the rain bend the grass and ping pong through the tree branches. It is the only time that I care that my office doesn’t have a window.

And it’s not just for watching the rain that I would like to have a window, as the sound of the rain falling to the earth captivates me as well. Falling asleep last night to the pattering of rain last night was amazing, especially in the new condo where the fact that we finally own a place with windows on more than one side really enhances the experience. It’s tempting to stick a piece of tin outside to add to the acoustics, but I’m pretty sure the HOA would be against that one.

Sadly the current storm is scheduled to head out tonight, followed by a string of clear days (although good for our softball league, as we might actually get our playoffs in this Sunday).

2012-366 Day 22 – New Semesters

One of the interesting things about working at an academic institution is seeing the ebb and flow of the campus. Tomorrow begins a new semester, so it will be a flood of activity and students (although high tide will be on Tuesday, as most students still prefer a Tuesday-Thursday class schedule even though Monday-Wednesday-Friday was recently converted to just Monday-Wednesday, with Friday getting the once a week classes like the one I teach). It can be particularly jarring since during the breaks, the campus can be quite quiet, particularly the winter break we just enjoyed, which features a very small selection of classes and, as such, mostly just staff on campus.

But tomorrow (soon to be today) everyone comes back with a vengeance, so much so that parking can be a real pain. We have to leave earlier the first two weeks of classes than the rest of the semester just to accommodate the extra volume. I need to get some extra sleep before then, so here you have a short blog post on why this blog post is so short.

2012-366 Day 21 – L.A. Sports Teams

As usual, these are my opinions and you are free to disagree. It just happens in this case I’m right.

Dodgers > Angels
Lakers > Clippers
Kings > Ducks
UCLA > USC
Whatever Pro Football team we get will stand on its own I guess.

Okay, done.

Oh, you want to know why?

Dodgers vs Angels: Angels are immediately disqualified due to the fact that, despite their creative geographical reasoning (Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim, really?), they are not a Los Angeles team. The fact that I’ve always lived in the Valley and, growing up, any games that I was taken to (thanks Dad and Mom!) were Dodger games was probably the overriding factor. Add in the fact that my first real sports memory is Orel Hershiser’s phenomenal 1988 season (he’s still my favorite player) and Gibson’s World Series home run that year, it really just cemented my love for them. Now if we could just get rid of McCourt quickly and actually win the Series again, I would be happy.

Lakers vs Clippers: Really? I don’t know, up until this year, what path of life would lead one to become a Clippers fan, but I wasn’t on it. Seeing as the Lakers are the only ones to give me championships to celebrate in recent memory, can’t say I’m going to complain about my choice. I am very curious to see what will happen in the post Bryant years.

Kings vs Ducks: Seeing as the Kings were the only hockey team in town while I was growing up, they were the default. I didn’t switch my allegiance to the Ducks because, again, Anaheim. I only really got into hockey in the last three years, and it’s been a bit of a roller coaster ride, would like to see the Kings play up to their potential. LOVE Quick though, easily my favorite player right now.

UCLA vs USC: Not even sure why, but was compelled to pick a side growing up and I came down on the side of the school I had a shot at going to (financially). All the scandals in the last five years at USC have definitely not made me regret my choice, even if it did come at the cost of winning football. Seeing as all the other sports have combined for over a 100 championships, I’m okay with that, and it’s fun to see which programs win every year. In slightly related historical news, I did get accepted to UCLA when applying to college and was offered a small scholarship, so that kind of counts for something, I guess?

Pro Football: I’ll root for whoever comes to town. I’m a little ashamed to admit it, but growing up, Raiders > Rams. I was young, I didn’t understand, and I think it was just because their uniforms looked cooler. Now that I understand the fan base and personalities, I don’t think I would have made the same choice. Thankfully they left and I was able to detach cleanly.

2012-366 Day 20 – Softball Tournaments

Most of you probably know that my favorite sport is baseball (owing entirely to my playing/umpiring the game during my formative years, even after switching to Cross Country/Track in High School, baseball was always my favorite). The closest I get to playing baseball now is softball, and I really love it. Usually this is my down period for sporting events, as the only softball league I currently play in takes place in the fall. That changes in a big way over the four three weeks, as I’m playing in two tournaments in that time frame.

The first tournament is on Sunday, January 29th, and is actually the conclusion to our Fall league, as the entirety of the playoffs was rained out by three successive rain storms the first three weekends in November (it, of course, has barely rained since, and, naturally, we are scheduled to have our first significant storm since this weekend. Anyone want to take bets that it WON’T rain next weekend?). Since it’s a single elimination tournament, we only have one guaranteed game, and the whole thing is going to be a giant toss up considering the amount of time all the teams have had off.

The second tournament on February 11th, however, is outside my usual comfort zone and looks to be a lot of fun. I have played very few games (sadly) outside of the Rocky Peak league over the past 13 years, but I saw this tournament and just had to join in. For those of you who didn’t/can’t follow the links, it is a softball tournament for Dodger blogs and their readers at a place called Big League Dreams in West Covina. The cool thing about the fields is that they are replicas of several big league parks (Fenway, Wrigley, Angel Stadium, Yankee Stadium – the original I believe, Tiger Stadium, and Dodger Stadium, of course) scaled down to softball size.

Big League Dreams West Covina- Dodger Stadium

Upon sign up, I got to rank which team I would want to play for, and I got my first choice (if I remember right), the Dodger Thoughts blog (I’ve been reading that one the longest, so it seemed appropriate). The owner of the blog just e-mailed us all this week, and the planning for our team is getting underway. It seems we have a pretty well balanced team from the positions everyone listed (P: 4 of 12, C: 2 of 12, 1B: 6 of 12, 2B: 11 of 12, 3B: 5 of 12, SS: 5 of 12, OF: 9 of 12 – glad I don’t have to coach this one), and preliminary planning has me starting at 3B. I pride myself on playing any position (I’m the only one on the team who listed ALL as their position), but I do enjoy third base in particular, as it is second only to pitcher for keeping your head in every play (otherwise you’ll end up eating a softball).

Full recaps will of course come after the tournaments (yay guaranteed blog topics!), and I’m excited for both!

2012-366 Day 19 – Sadness

Warning up front: This is more of a brain dump than a blog post, detailing my feelings and my working through them. I cannot for the life of me imagine that it is interesting to anyone outside of a handful of the handful of people who read this blog. You are more than welcome to read on (why else would I post this publicly), just know that I don’t really know where this is going to go and I make no guarantee that it is worth your time. (Hmm, there’s probably a large portion of the internet to which this disclaimer could be applied.)

So, I strained my hip and back in Karate last night. Nothing major, just a definite tweak I knew I’d be feeling later. We were having a white stripe night, which are the nights were we practice the individual moves and kick progressions. As the first white stripe night as a purple, I was introduced to the side kick progression and the back kick progression, both of which require turning one foot 180 degrees from the direction of travel of the rest of the body. I was having a lot of problems as this required a lot of balanced shifting of the vast majority of the body, and I currently still have a majority of body to deal with. It didn’t help that I was overextending on the kicks, which threw my body even more off balance. Watching myself in the mirror, I could see how awkward and. . . heavy I looked.

I sat down after class and looked at the belt progression on the wall, counting the ranks in two month intervals for the early going and switching to four month intervals for the remainder, calculating just how far I was from my ultimate goal of Black Belt. I thought also of my weight and running goals, and just how far away I was from those, and how they all intertwined. I felt a sort of sadness settle over me like a blanket, but one which did not provide any warmth.

In general, I go through life like I go through my runs, my vision fixed five to ten feet in front of me, scanning for obstacles and charting a path (the reason I trip and fall every few months is that even though I have cataloged an obstacle five to ten feet out, that doesn’t mean that I will have picked my foot up high enough to clear it once it arrives, and I’m still looking five to ten feet down the road). Sometimes I look further ahead and, depending on where I am in my progress, am either appropriately heartened or somewhat steeled against the remaining track. Rarely do I have the reaction I had last night, and I was very quick to realize it for what it was, a temporary glimpse of something that would require many steps to achieve. I know I am going to get there, but that does not mean I was angry with myself for the sadness nor dismissive of it. I allowed it to linger for a time because it was an acceptable reaction, and, as long as I did not wallow in it, a reaction that would only serve to make the final accomplishment sweeter when I could look back on this time and say, “I may have been disheartened, but I pushed on and still accomplished my goals.”

2012-366 Day 18 – SOPA/PIPA and the Blackout

Tried looking for anything on Wikipedia today? What are SOPA and PIPA? Why are all these sites censoring and blacking out today? What can you do to help? Long story short, there are two bills, one in the House (SOPA – Stop Online Piracy Act) and one in the Senate (PIPA – Protect IP Act) which both could give broad powers to people who shouldn’t have them, allowing them to shut off websites if there is content they don’t like (or think they might own). I’m going to step out of the way today and give you some links to read information more important than mine from people who know more about it than I do, so read on for more info and what you can do.
