2012-366 Day 66 – Work

Had a last minute call interrupt the break that I was going to use to write this post, but now that I’m back I realize I didn’t have a topic yet anyway, so why not tell you a little bit about my work by relating what I just did?

One of the the Senior Representatives came back and told me we were having an issue at the counter with one of the IDs, the person’s name was too long to fit onto the card. Knowing the Photo ID system, I told her I had to go back up front, because all the software is loaded on the counter machines (because we only have that many licenses for it). So I went to the front counter and met with the person and the Representative who was helping him.

Now we could do one of two things, either cut the name down (which the Representative said they did and were still having issues) or lengthen the name field on the template. Unfortunately we can only edit templates on one of the three machines, and the one we were working at wasn’t the one. After clearing up confusion as to which ID I was working with (it was the Staff ID, not Student ID, which made sense after I opened up the Student one and saw that the field there was already all the way across the ID), I copied the template to the server, renamed the copy to append the phrase “_LongName” and moved it to the template editing station. Opening the new template I created, I extended the name box so that it went from the left edge to the picture on the right, saved it, and then opened the template in the regular program to enter the name for testing. With the newly lengthened box we were able to fit the whole name and generate an ID for the person.

A pretty simple task, but these are the kinds of things I do with my day. The specialized knowledge was pretty much knowing where the templates are stored, how to make a copy of the template the system will recognize as valid – there are a couple files you have to rename, and how to use the template editor. See, you could do my job too! Okay, it might take you a little longer and I’m not yet willing to give it up, but now you’re one step closer.

2012-366 Day 65 – Losing

This may or may not have anything to do with recent soccer results . . .

There are people who handle losing well and those who do not (alternatively there are also those that handle winning well and those that don’t, but that’s a different issue). I personally believe that I’m pretty good at handling losing, and that’s largely due to the perspective I keep on the activities I participate in. I have played A LOT of games and sports over the course of my life so far, and I know that it is impossible to win them all (especially seeing as I have already lost some of them). By keeping this view of things I can very quickly move my focus to the next game or activity and not dwell on the feeling of loss.

There is one situation where it is more difficult for me to lose with composure, and that is when I feel that I or my team am not being given a fair chance at winning. Whether it is the other team cheating or some deficiency on the part of the officiating (being an umpire myself it takes a build up of bad calls to trigger that reaction in me, I understand how hard it is to call single plays of a bang bang nature), if I have the perception that my side is being denied a chance at a rightful win my blood will get boiling. In fact, the last time I came near to an all out rage was a situation where bad officiating and “liberties” taken by the other teams combined and I was pushed to my breaking point by a final bad call. I stuffed the reaction nearly instantly, but could easily have tipped the other way in the moment. However, since most games that I play are cheat-free and controversy-limited, it has been very few times which that side shows up.

I would imagine that this would be a harder case to make (myself being a good loser) should I participate in activities with higher stakes. I have no problems losing board and card games because you can always just play again later. The sports that I participate in carry no more importance than a yearly championship title, and since the teams get reshuffled every year, there’s basically a reset each season where you get to try again. I’ll admit losing the last game of each season is a little harder, but that’s usually more due to the fact that you have to wait so long to try again (though the one time my team won the last game of the season was really awesome).

One thing that helps me have such a balanced attitude is that in most cases I will have developed a strategy for dealing with whatever game or sport I am currently involved in. Most of the time that strategy will allow me to be competitive enough to be in the position to win should the opportunity present itself, and if that opportunity never arises then at least I was close. I have nearly as much fun on draft days for our sports leagues as the actually games just because I get to setup my strategy for the year. That’s why I read the soccer rules several times before my first game, so I could develop a bit of a strategy going in. Some worked (drilling into my head not to handle the ball if passed to me by my teammates), some have not (baseball style passes to midfield to try and get my forwards a jump, the first one was picked off and I was scored on shortly thereafter. For now, better to maintain possession than try that again).

As for losing with my first foray into the world of soccer, the losses are currently somewhat phantasmal, due to the fact that I’m writing them off to my inexperience. As I get more experience then I can take more responsibility and perhaps feel more connected to them, although I do feel a degree of guilt that my teammates have to endure my learning curve. I suppose then that the secret to losing well is the same as thing that gets you closer to winning: Leave it all on the field.

2012-366 Day 64 – Soccer Game 2

The growing process continues. Whereas I would had to have been perfect last week for the team to get the win, this week my mistakes were the difference between the win and loss. One bad angle, another ball that I didn’t see that snuck by on the right side, a hard shot that I deflected back to the person shooting it who scored on the rebound, and a shot that bounced off the back boards and off my sliding into the net. That said, I also made some saves I wouldn’t have last week. I feel bad subjecting the team to my learning curve, and am ready to step aside any time, but they seem to think I’m doing well enough for the moment. Practice will help, but it’s hard to get game reps with defenders and shooters to get used to watching everything on the field.

On the bright side our offense started clicking in the second half (we were down 4-1 at halftime) despite the fact that our captain had to sit out with a bum ankle, so hopefully we can carry that forward and our captain heals up soon. Also, we were up 1-0 for the first 10 minutes, just need to extend that out for the other 3/4s of the game. The extra padding I wore this week helped, I was able to go down for more shots without having to worry too much about tearing up my knees. I’m having fun, but hoping to become a bit less porous down the line. I hope the team isn’t upset with me, they’ve all been saying nice things to me so far and I don’t want to let them down.

2012-366 Day 63 – Karate III

So I passed my test this morning and am now officially an Orange belt (although I won’t actually receive the belt for another week, as the higher ranks test next Saturday and then we will have a joint belt ceremony next Monday). The test seemed to go very well, though I’ll get my grade sheet with the belt and can see what areas I need to work on then. The amusing part, to me, was that over the course of the morning I actually played a part in the tests for four different ranks:

1) White to Purple: We had a white belt who was skipping Purple to Orange and, as such, was taking both the White to Purple and Purple to Orange tests at the same time. Since he was in the same group I was when presenting, my group did both the Purple and Orange belt material.

2) Purple to Orange: The test I was actually taking.

3) Orange to Blue: One of the Purple belts was skipping to Blue and had a partner who had been recently injured and couldn’t fall, so I got to be the person who attacked him and was thwarted several times.

4) Blue to Blue-Green: We have one student at the school who is around 6’4″ and I’m the only lower rank student within three inches of him, so I get to attack for him as well.

In all a fun, but tiring morning. Having made the decision to not skip a belt allowed me to focus on a narrower set of skills and I felt I did quite well, certainly better than if I had tried to cram everything in. That being said, I have the basics for the next belt down already, so the next two months could be a little long until the next test.

Of course I followed up all the excitement of the morning with running four miles in the afternoon, as I figured it was good practice for Ragnar (tiring my legs out in the morning and then running on them again later in the day). Hopefully I can stay upright for soccer tomorrow.

2012-366 Day 62 – Feedback Incentives

I mentioned back when talking about my Internet presence that I have an entry on Rate my Professors which consists of three reviews from back when I was teaching a lab class while a graduate student. Those three reviews span the entire spectrum and none have left comments, effectively giving zero information about who I am as a teacher. Even had there been more concrete information, these reviews are from seven years ago in a class and style I no longer teach, so they are even less relevant now.

I have always found review sites like these to be of dubious utility due to the problem of feedback incentives. Simply put, there is no reason for a person to leave a review unless they are at either end of the satisfaction spectrum. Either they hated the experience and needed a place to vent, or they loved the experience and are willing to gloss over any problems to sing their praises. Not only that, but the reviewers have to know the site exists and be willing to use it as a resource. CSUN students as a whole do not appear to put much stock in Rate My Professor, as even the most reviewed Professors have only 226 reviews to their name. That may seem like a bit, but keep in mind that this is 200+ people over at least seven years, when the average full-time professor would have at least that many students per semester. There’s a pretty sharp drop off too, as the tenth most rated professor only has 126 ratings. How does a site encourage users from all aspects of the class to give their opinion? Sadly I don’t know the answer to that one, otherwise I’d be making a lot more money somewhere else.

Obviously a rating system is only as good as the incentives in place for accurate feedback in an area that many people agree to utilize. It is a little sad, as accurate professor ratings could be a helpful tool for students looking to get the most out of their college experience, but there does not seem to be a comprehensive, centralized place for them to find that information. Googling “professor ratings” brought up a page of sites, most of which were even more sparsely populated than Rate My Professor. Until someone solves the problem of feedback incentives, these sites will remain marginally useful at best.

2012-366 Day 61 – Resolution Update

Anyone know where February went? Anyone? I know that it’s a short month, but even with the extra day that one just flew by! It’s time for our monthly check-in on the old resolutions.

1) One blog post (long or short) every day this year. – Check.

2) Lose 20 pounds. – Kind of stalled this month, bouncing between 233 and 237. One could probably blame the fact that I started running more this month (Why? Because running makes you eat more and builds leg muscle, neither of which help lose weight). I’ve been doing better about watching what I eat recently, and, between that and increased mileage running, I have the feeling I’m going to reach the tipping point soon.

3) Run 600 miles. – Still behind on this one, but made large strides (ha!) towards getting back on track. 32 miles this month versus 8 last month is a good jump, and I’ve recently signed up for two Half-Marathons (Disneyland Half in September, L.A. Rock and Roll Half in October), which training for those will surely put me on the right path. 40/600 = 6.7%

4) Complete 5th Gup Green belt test by end of year. – Still good to go, next test is this Saturday.

5) Complete first novel. – At this rate, won’t have even started on this one. We’ll see what happens later I guess.

Things seem to be trending in a positive direction, just need to stay motivated (and find more blog topics). Thanks for hanging out with me so far!

2012-366 Day 60 – College Sports

Well, originally I was going to do a post on today being Leap Day and how it was kind of the inspiration for this blog series (2012-365 just didn’t have the same ring to it, although Googling the phrase brings up the fact that many other people had the same idea and I think we may check some out in a future installment). That got derailed when I heard about a brewing UCLA scandal yesterday afternoon and then heard on the news last night that an article on a “scandal” in the UCLA men’s basketball program was coming out this morning.

It was. It did. It’s very bad.

In case you don’t have time to read the entire article, it boils down to this: a hands-off coach that coddles star players while leaving the players to make their own way in navigating the college mine field. The teams of the last three years have basically been divided between the conscientious players and the raging partiers, with no guidance from the top. I’m actually glad that Wooden passed away before this came out, because it is an absolute perversion of everything he stood for and an embarrassment to what he represented. Howland’s approach MIGHT work at the pro level, where the athletes are a little older and have an image (and earnings) to protect, but it is the absolute wrong way to run a college program. I am amazed that Ben Howland still has a job as of this moment, because, in general, it’s a pretty bad thing when Sports Illustrated can pull together such a damning article simply talking to your players from the last four years. I firmly believe he has to go and a much more involved coach needs to be brought in.

Sadly, as scandals go, this one was pretty tame compared to the rest of the college sports world. The fact that it happened in my favorite school, especially one with UCLA’s tradition, makes it hurt more, but it’s unlikely that any NCAA sanctions or the like will come out of it. In fact, if Howland isn’t fired, pretty much everyone of importance on this issue is essentially sweeping it under the rug. This all points to a larger problem in college sports, the making money off the work of college students who don’t really know better at this point in their lives.

I am hardly the first person to point this out, and I also understand the opponents who say that the scholarships are all the reimbursement a student requires. My opinion is that sports have taken entirely too much importance in the American University system. The fact that the same term (scholarship) is used for the money given the one-and-done basketball player and the class valedictorian (if they received any money at all) is a colossal joke. The influence of college sports is thrown further out of alignment here in Los Angeles, where the lack of a professional football team has made USC (and to a far lesser extent UCLA) the only game in town, with allegiances declared and an over-importance placed on the smallest actions of college aged kids. There’s a reason why USC has had so many money scandals tied to its football program, and that’s an organization that is pushing too hard to stay relevant and feels the only way it can do so is to bend (and break) the rules.

In all honesty I think amateur athletics at the college level needs to be separated from the schools. No other country does it the way we do, and that is reflected in our test scores and overall attitude towards schools. The fact that a school is both responsible for the academic progress of certain individuals and for the athletic molding of others at the same time while trying to apply the same criteria to both is ridiculous, and the source of so many of these scandals. If we cleanly broke the two apart schools would have much better graduation rates and pretty much every other metric they are measured by would improve, while the money that goes to propping up the non-money making sports (of which they are the majority, it’s why CSUN doesn’t have a football team anymore) could be put back into academics. Yes, certain schools’ reputations would suffer, but perhaps then alumni could donate to the programs that truly make a difference?

Now I’m not saying that every student-athlete is a drain on a University (perhaps I should have this earlier in the article). I have nothing but respect for those who complete their degrees and star on a college team. I’m saying it would be better for them to go to school and participate in a separate league where they can get appropriately paid for their services, and we can allow those people with no intention of working on their academics to progress directly to the pro leagues if they think they can make it.

I think I’ll cut my rant short here, as I can feel it starting to get a little rambly. Sadly I don’t anticipate any of this happening, too many people are getting paid too much money and none of them really care what is best for the academic side of the schools. Sadly some of the people not getting this money are the students who are actually doing all the work (and the ones who are getting the money are breaking the rules). While the system is the way it is, however, I will continue to root for the non-basketball teams at UCLA (until Howland is replaced) and our teams here at CSUN to do their best in the system they are stuck in. Just because the system is flawed doesn’t mean I can’t want the best for the people stuck in it.

2012-366 Day 59 – Double Take

A short post today to honor the regular ending of the month of February, the shortest month which will be extended by one day tomorrow. Sure, we’ll go with that and not “I was having a hard time thinking up something for today and needed an excuse to run this picture I took.”

Last week, after work, I was walking down to where I usually meet Jess and it happened that we were both arriving at about the same time. I stopped and backed up a bit with what I’m sure was a funny look on my face, and Jess asked me what was going on. I didn’t want to ruin it, so I said nothing until she reached where I was and could see what I was seeing:

Pedestrian Crossing Sign with Red Bull Wings

Red Bull gives the person standing next to you wings! Wait, that's not right . . .

Yup, someone had decorated the pedestrian crossing sign in front of University Hall with a little Red Bull can and wings. The wings are still there, but someone has made off with the little Red Bull can (I’m not going to lie, I’m a little upset I didn’t think to snag it). Seeing as the Red Bull sample pushers are often on campus, I’m not putting it past them that this was an official prank and not some random person declaring their love for Red Bull. Either way it made us laugh.

2012-366 Day 58 – Dear Kwon

Pull up a chair folks, it’s story time, and, while you may have heard it before, I’m practicing telling stories in the written format. Jess and I were on the way back from somewhere (San Diego, I believe) one evening and were fiddling with the radio, settling on a random pop song since that was the only station not playing commercials at the time. The song ends and the DJ starts talking, we realize after a few seconds that we had stumbled onto “Love Songs on the KOST.” For those of you who don’t know, KOST is the soft rock station in southern California and “Love Songs” is the block where they play dedications and read fawning letters from sappy people (What? No, no one’s really described me as romantic. Why do you ask? . . . Oh). Thankfully I vaguely recall it being the Ted Zigenbush(?) edition, so the breathy female voices were relegated to a minimum.

For whatever reason we didn’t dive immediately for the next station, but instead reached out slow enough that the next dedication caught our attention enough for us to pause. “Dear Kwon (or Quan, or Kwan, or something like that. I don’t know, it’s radio, I’m just guessing here),” the letter began. Now I’ll paraphrase the rest here, because the heart of the story is true even if I don’t remember the exact phrasing in detail. “I am grateful for the relationship we’ve had and the time we’ve been together. I love you and wish you the best in the year to come.” Okay, we’re doing good so far, but something about this letter feels a little off. Probably why we subconsciously decided to stay on the station. And then came the “but.”

“But I have to stay true to myself and the New Years Resolution I made and can’t get myself caught up in you again. It’s over and I can’t go back to the way it used to be.” Bam, like a Clayton Kershaw curveball this letter just dropped like a falling comet. Jess and I imagined that the screener only read the first couple lines and passed it on, and the DJ got to this point and it was too late, like the pilot screaming, “Pull up! Pull up!” And this was supposed to be a dedication, what possible song could they follow this up with? We had to know and so stuck around. After wrapping the letter and giving the usual DJ platitudes, they kicked into this song:

They somehow managed to crush the ball out of the park with their song selection, although I don’t recall if it was attached to the letter or the DJ picked it (“Almost Lover” by A Fine Frenzy if you can’t get the Youtube link). We stayed on the station for the next several songs just to see how they got out of this mess, and the progression of songs from that point was like slowly climbing out of a dark cave. I don’t remember the songs exactly, but one of them was a Taylor Swift ex-boyfriend song if that tells you anything about the trajectory they had to take to get back to positive songs. Jess and I still love telling this story, and Jess coined the phrase “the Dear Kwon letter” to refer to it (my response, “I see what you did there”). I maintain that the Kwon of this letter had one of two reactions, either the expected crying session or, I feel the probably more likely, “Who is this crazy lady talking about me on the radio?” Also, since they don’t use last names, I’ve got to think that it’s a good thing Kwon isn’t too common of a name, as not a lot of guys had to call their significant other to make sure they were still in a relationship after that epic radio split.

Unrelated, I must be getting a decent audience on the blog, as I keep having to clear our spam comments caught in the filter. Keep up the good work loyal reader(s).

2012-366 Day 57 – Soccer Game 1

And we are finally underway. I volunteered to be the team’s primary goalie, although I’ll be learning on the job as I’ve never been a soccer goalie before (I did play some goalie in broom ball and street hockey in high school, so I’m used to the idea). I like the idea of being the last line of defense in general, so it’s a position I seek out. After letting the team kick some off me in warm up, I felt pretty good and ready to go.

The final score was a 7-1 loss, although it’s not as bad as the scoreboard may seem. In actuality I allowed 5 goals, four before the half and 1 after, but goals scored by the women count for two, so we were down 5-1 at the half and the second half goal was by a woman, so there’s your final of 7-1. There were a couple I should have stopped (including one of the women’s goals), and a couple where our defense got taken apart and there was not much I could do. One rule quirk, however, is that once a team goes down 4 it can have an extra man on the field, so we spent a little over half the game with an extra man and just couldn’t put it in the net. I think with some practice the attack will go more smoothly, and I can only get better (especially learning after the game that I can armor up a little bit, I was a bit hesitant to throw my body around today with no knee protection). We were also playing with a couple subs, so we’ll see what the team looks like when the regulars are all here.

One of the teams after ours needed a sub at goalie, as there goalie wasn’t coming. They asked me and I knew Jess was watching the Oscars, so I called her and told her I was picking up the extra game. That one ended up being a 12-7 loss, which, despite the score, I played a little better in. When the team I was playing for went down four, they added the extra attacker but then kept them all in the attacking zone, so I was often facing an odd man rush on the defensive end once they cleared the ball out. That was some good practice, even though I let more goals go by.

Long story short, I’m well aware I’m a novice and need plenty of work, but I’m hopeful about the future. One of the women on our team is regularly a goalie (she must want to play a different position, and I must not have been too terrible that she’s not jumping back in), and I’m going to get there early next week for some tips. Between the extra work and the extra padding, I will be a bit more aggressive and am looking forward to playing again.
