2012-366 Day 57 – Soccer Game 1

And we are finally underway. I volunteered to be the team’s primary goalie, although I’ll be learning on the job as I’ve never been a soccer goalie before (I did play some goalie in broom ball and street hockey in high school, so I’m used to the idea). I like the idea of being the last line of defense in general, so it’s a position I seek out. After letting the team kick some off me in warm up, I felt pretty good and ready to go.

The final score was a 7-1 loss, although it’s not as bad as the scoreboard may seem. In actuality I allowed 5 goals, four before the half and 1 after, but goals scored by the women count for two, so we were down 5-1 at the half and the second half goal was by a woman, so there’s your final of 7-1. There were a couple I should have stopped (including one of the women’s goals), and a couple where our defense got taken apart and there was not much I could do. One rule quirk, however, is that once a team goes down 4 it can have an extra man on the field, so we spent a little over half the game with an extra man and just couldn’t put it in the net. I think with some practice the attack will go more smoothly, and I can only get better (especially learning after the game that I can armor up a little bit, I was a bit hesitant to throw my body around today with no knee protection). We were also playing with a couple subs, so we’ll see what the team looks like when the regulars are all here.

One of the teams after ours needed a sub at goalie, as there goalie wasn’t coming. They asked me and I knew Jess was watching the Oscars, so I called her and told her I was picking up the extra game. That one ended up being a 12-7 loss, which, despite the score, I played a little better in. When the team I was playing for went down four, they added the extra attacker but then kept them all in the attacking zone, so I was often facing an odd man rush on the defensive end once they cleared the ball out. That was some good practice, even though I let more goals go by.

Long story short, I’m well aware I’m a novice and need plenty of work, but I’m hopeful about the future. One of the women on our team is regularly a goalie (she must want to play a different position, and I must not have been too terrible that she’s not jumping back in), and I’m going to get there early next week for some tips. Between the extra work and the extra padding, I will be a bit more aggressive and am looking forward to playing again.
