2012-366 Day 86 – Plateau

You know the old joke where it’s hard for men to ask for directions? I’ve never been much for that one, perhaps as a life-long student I’ve learned the value of seeking instruction. That being said, there is a substantial difference between seeking direction and seeking a starting point.

I’ve arrived at a very comfortable place in life. Happily married, two (2!) good jobs in a time where people struggle to find one, owner of a condo and a car, living in L.A. with a great church and two attendant great sports ministries to play in. My substantive complaint, then, may seem petty and reek of #firstworldproblems, but it still remains: what do I do next?

Now, lest you believe that this perhaps echos the plaintive cry of the youth in summer (“I’m bored.”), I should inform you that I have lined up several options (Which, incidentally, is why I never uttered those words growing up as a kid. My parents’ response was invariably, “I can find you something to do.”). Unfortunately the problem is a sort of “paralysis by analysis,” what do I want to do first? It’s a lot easier for me to sit around and play games and watch TV rather than make any substantive attempt to get these options off the ground. And that is perhaps the trickiest part, most of these activities will require some initial background investment of work before anyone can see the results, so even if I (have) started some, it will be a while before any benefit will be reaped.

Herein lays the advantage of having started this blog project: rather than idly kicking around the idea that I’ve got to get moving again and then moving on, I can instead write a blog post about it and then have the reminder to myself preserved in cyberspace. So self, let’s start getting a move on. People are going to be expecting things out of you (again) now.

2012-366 Day 85 – Weekend Wrap Up I

Welcome to the first installment of the WWU (Weekend Wrap Up), where we look back on the week’s posts and add any updates or further thoughts. Expect them mostly on Saturdays for the time being, but when we’re out of season for sports (or like today, when I have the bye or a rain out) they may sneak over to Sunday.

Sunday (3/18) – Soccer Game 4: As mentioned, today’s games were rained out, although we had the bye anyway so it won’t affect our games. As far as I can tell the games were just cancelled, so the schedule will remain the same from here on out, but we’ll see if they announce otherwise. We’ll also see how they deal with the standings if six teams have less games than the other two. The next game on the schedule is next Sunday at 5pm.

Monday (3/19) – Watching Paint Dry: With the paint dried and the new couches in, our living room has really come together. That came in really handy this weekend, as we spent Saturday and Sunday in and were able to really enjoy them both.

Tuesday (3/20) – Fantasy Baseball: Wishing the season would start, spending a lot of time second guessing myself at the moment. We’ve already had our first trade vetoed (I wasn’t involved in the trade) and everyone’s kind of chomping at the bit. My team seems a bit dinged up, although I may have lost my first significant draft pick to significant injury (the second pitcher I picked), which is frustrating. Until the season starts, however, it’s a lot of hurry up and wait.

Wednesday (3/21) – Rave Reviews: I got some good feedback on this one, although a few have come in over the last couple days that I wish I had before. Maybe there will be a sequel of sorts in the future, I’ll just have to figure out a new framing device (don’t worry, it won’t be terribly soon).

Thursday (3/22) – Home Improvement II: The cat has gotten over it. He’s a big fan of the couches now.

Friday (3/23) – Food Trucks: We did enjoy the food trucks on Friday night (a bit too much as usual). Had the gunslinger again, which was excellent as usual. Also had a hot sausage link from a BBQ truck (The Q Spot), which was good and spicy with an excellent Texas style BBQ sauce. Had half an empanada and some chimichurri fries from an Argentine truck as well. Ate a lot of good food, got a bit of exercise walking around, and had a good time.

Saturday (3/24) – Curses: Tying this back more to the NCAA bracket topic, turns out that, while my bracket as a whole may have stunk, I did a pretty good job on the Final Four. I netted (heh) three of the four teams (Kansas, Kentucky, Ohio State) and my championship game pairing (Kentucky vs Ohio State) is still in play. At least it was until I typed that. Curses!

Jess says that since this was originally supposed to be our marriage blog, before I hijacked it for my New Year’s project, that I need to do more marriage related things. I’ll keep an eye out for situations like tonight that I can relate and not get in too much trouble (I’m doubly clear since she told me to talk about it). Long story short, when two people who love each other very much have non-complimentary effects to having low blood sugar, you can’t both wait too long to decide about dinner. I get very cranky when my blood sugar is low (another blog terms it LBSCBD – Low Blood Sugar Cranky Butt Disorder), while Jess finds it hard to make decisions. We work through it (not well, but we have to come to a decision eventually), but obviously it would be a lot better if we didn’t allow the situation to arise in the first place. A lazy Sunday does not always allow for such preparations though, so remembering to apologize afterward goes a long way . . .

2012-366 Day 84 – Curses

Stupid Kings (NHL hockey team). They lost today 4-2 to the Boston Bruins. Of course, they had won six in a row and were probably due. For a while I thought I was cursed, in the two games I’ve attended in person the Kings have scored more goals in their own net than the opponents (by a 1-0 margin). After watching them miss two wide open nets tonight and losing by two after watching two of those six wins, I’ve decide that I’m no longer willing to attribute my influence to a bunch of guys skating around on the ice (yes, I know it was dumb in the first place).

It’s funny how fans believe that their actions and activities can alter events happening so far away, whether it’s always sitting in the same place on the couch or wearing the same thing. It’s also funny how people can attach so much meaning and significance to millionaires in special laundry playing games. Yes, this is an often cited crutch of an argument and really doesn’t matter one way or another, like I said, just funny. I have made it a personal conviction (and not recently) to enjoy the good times of being a fan, but not allow a bad game to ruin a perfectly good day. In some ways I’ve chosen to keep the good fan experiences while avoiding the bad.

All that being said, go Kings, I really want to watch the hockey playoffs again!

Also, I have to thank Jess, as I almost forgot to update today!

2012-366 Day 83 – Food Trucks

One of the trends that’s been going on for several years now in the L.A. area (and many more cities in the meantime) has been gourmet food trucks that roam around the city, dishing out their wares for whoever is lucky enough to be near where they land and are willing to wait in the sometimes generous lines. Jess and I started trying them out a couple years ago and have slowly accumulated a list of favorites. Our patronage has tapered off over the past few months, it remains to be seen whether that was due to the cooler weather or a general desire to eat a little healthier. We’re back on the trail tonight, so here’s some of our favorites from the past and what I like there.

Kogi BBQ – http://kogibbq.com/
One of the originals and most successful, I actually like this one a lot better than Jess does. I highly recommend the short rib tacos or burritos, but they have all sorts of interesting fusion (Korean/Mexican) foods to try.

The Wien – http://www.thewien.com/
A hot dog truck with all sorts of variations, my absolute favorite is called the Gunslinger. It’s a beef hot dog wrapped with bacon, topped with barbecue sauce, fried onion shreds, and smothered in cheddar cheese. Soooo good, but you can see why health concerns start getting involved with these trucks.

Grill ‘Em All – http://www.grillemalltruck.com/
They won the inaugural Food Network “Great Food Truck Race” and they deserved it. Tried their signature Behemoth on a whim and it is absolutely wrong how incredibly good that burger is. It’s a bit pricey, but what do you expect for cheddar cheese, bacon, beer soaked onions, pickles, Grandma’s Mosh Pit BBQ Sauce, all capped with grilled cheese buns. Yes, grilled cheese sandwiches are the buns!

South Philly Experience – http://southphillyexperience.com/
There are several Philly cheese steak trucks roaming about, but this our preferred one. I have to remember that my favorite is the Pizza Steak (provolone and marinara) and not the Italian steak (provolone and broccoli rabe), that one time I mixed it up was a rude surprise.

The Grilled Cheese Truck – http://www.thegrilledcheesetruck.com/
It’s between Kogi, Grill ‘Em All, and these guys for who traditionally has the longest line. Many people love them, I think they’re just okay (then again, I get many rave reviews of my grilled cheese, so maybe I’m just snobby).

Buttermilk Truck – http://buttermilktruck.com/
I’m a big fan of a place that names themselves after a product and then just crushed that product out of the park. This breakfast themed truck has buttermilk biscuits that are so good, they might actually make you cry. Even now I can taste the one biscuit I’ve had from them, and that was a good year ago.

Mossie Lee’s Southern Cuisine – http://www.mossielees.com/
I actually haven’t had much from this truck, but I will say this: amazing macaroni and cheese.

Tornado Potato – http://www.mytornadopotato.com/
I’ve covered some heart-stopping stuff here, but nothing comes close to being as good to eat but bad for you as this one. The Screwdriver is a sausage wrapped in a potato (click through to see it) and then covered in chili and nacho cheese. It is so good, but probably pretty deadly too!

I’m leaning towards the Wien tonight if they’re out in Chatsworth (they usually are on Friday night), although the Screwdriver will be a tempting option if it’s available.

2012-366 Day 82 – Home Improvement II

Short one today, we came home early to oversee the delivery of our two new household items.

They replace our old couch and love seat which I took with me from my parent’s house when I moved out 12 years ago. I had grown up with them and they’re actually older than I am. They were incredibly comfortable, but sadly the structure was starting to show its age. These guys are a bit bigger than the old ones, but they also host a bed (in the couch) and recliners (in the love seat). We can now host a small army in our living room alone.

Cat’s still a bit confused though.

2012-366 Day 81 – Rave Reviews

What has really surprised me is how well received my blog posts have been by random strangers. I haven’t allowed their comments to show up because I don’t want anyone to feel bad, but here’s a sampling of their thoughts and my responses.

“this goes to my bookmark list. fantastic collection of texts. keep up the work.” – Alcinda
Thanks Alcinda! I’ll keep up the work on my collection of texts.

“your words are like advice for me, i loved your post.” – Edelina
“Like advice” for you? Maybe I should give “like advice” on grammar?

“thanks for such an excellent post and also the evaluate, i am completely impressed! maintain stuff like this coming.” – Daniela
I’m not sure what evaluate as a noun is, but I’m glad it impressed you. I can’t wait to maintain some more with the reaction I’m getting.

“you should publish more articles like this and you will be famous. you have the talent to become a super star. your article is superb. keep it up.” – Elisabeth
Finally, some recognition of my real talent. Although I’m starting to suspect that there’s something fishy about these people. I’m especially concerned that all of these posters have been female, and all of them have had links to unrelated websites. Probably nothing though, I am awesome.

“So Get Ready To Pop Your Cork As We Celebrate 2011 With Our Top 10 Nude Scenes Of The Year.” – sklenarikovaq
Whoa, whoa, whoa there sklenarikovaq, we’re not that kind of site. And who named you, a Scrabble bag?

“this goes to my bookmark list. fantastic collection of texts. keep up the work.” – Aleteia
Thanks Aleteia! I’ll keep up the work on my collection of texts.

HEY! Wait a minute . . . That’s the exact same thing Alcinda said! Huh, must be twins separated at birth.

“i am impressed by your work.” – Cora
Much better, now we’re getting back to the important stuff.

“ever thought about writing a book someday?” – Dafne
Why yes, yes I have. Thanks for the encouragement, uh . . . “Dafne.”

“thanks for giving in the reviews.” – Amanda
You’re welcome.

Wait, this was in reply to one of my Soccer Game posts, I didn’t review anything.

“thanks a lot for enjoying this beauty article with me. i am appreciating it very much!” – Fabiana
And I definitely haven’t written any beauty articles! What are these shenanigans? Hold on a second, I need to check this out . . .

Oh, Spam (electronic), got it.

2012-366 Day 80 – Fantasy Baseball

In a fervent desire to avoid the jinx that I put on my NCAA Bracket (currently in the bottom 4.2% on ESPN.com) I will be strictly avoiding any sort of predictive measure in this space. That being said, I’m playing in my first “for-realsies” fantasy baseball league this year (always having played in random leagues on various sites in the past). I did play in a 20-team league last year (came in 3rd) that was put on by one of the webcomics I read (Surviving the World) which was a lot of fun and had its own unique challenges. (How familiar are you with everyone’s triple A teams?)

This league, however, is my first with A) some people I know directly, B) has an entry fee and prizes, and C) is a keeper league, so players matter more over the long haul. We had our inaugural draft on Saturday (after a little bit of confusion), so my 25 guys are ready to go for the season. I already have made my first trade (with the league commissioner) as I found one of the guys in the draft that he wanted but didn’t see on the screen (Aroldis Chapman for Lonnie Chisenhall, a 100 mph throwing potential starter for the Indians 3B of the future), and my first potential drop (looking at you Marco Scutaro, with your .150 spring training batting average).

That always has been one of my strengths in fantasy baseball, not being so attached to people that I’m not afraid to cut them. Granted, Scutaro was my 21st round selection (out of 25), but you’d be surprised how many people gain an irrational attachment to people they draft. I also tend to pick up good players on the Waiver wire, although that may be more of a challenge this year as there is more incentive for people to keep paying attention (instead of half the league not paying attention to their team by the All-Star break).

I’m very much looking forward to this season, and I’m sure I’ll be updating you on the team’s progress (good or bad, both make for more potentially interesting reading than average) from here on out.

On an unrelated note, it’s been mentioned to me that the footer is becoming a bit unwieldy. I’ll re-examine what I want to do down there, so look for that change coming soon.

2012-366 Day 79 – Watching Paint Dry

So I spent today hiding in the bedroom while a guy painted our living room, dining area, and hallway. Most of the walls are the color on the right in the picture below, while the wall that you see when you come in is the color on the left:

It was a pretty well timed (if last minute) time out, because I had a pretty nasty bout of congestion (either allergies or illness, I’m not sure yet. Still getting used to having allergies) which kept me up most of the night. Getting to rest was pretty ideal, though the paint fumes didn’t necessarily help the sinuses. That being said, I’m taking it easy on the update tonight, so I’ll see you all tomorrow.

2012-366 Day 78 – Soccer Game 4

We had the first game of the afternoon and, with the time change, a low sun in the sky. Since the field is oriented East to West, the sun was in the eyes of whoever was facing West. Lucky me, I got to face West first. Things begun rather inauspiciously with the first shot going through my legs (for some reason I jumped backwards for it, though it never left the ground), and it was from an angle so I can’t even blame the sun. But then we started to score and I actually started to look like I knew what I was doing. One play had me sliding out of the box to the right to block a ball coming in which prevented the goal but gave the other team a shot from the top of the goalie box (with a two person wall in front). The other team acted like they were going to kick it into the wall but then passed it around the wall to my left where someone had snuck to that side. I managed to slide over and get in front of it, killing the scoring chance. We ended the first half on the positive end of a 4-1 score.

After going up 5-1 to begin the second half, one of the guys on the other team put a perfect shot into the top corner of the net just out of my reach. We managed to tack on a few more goals and then I managed to stop the first shot of a breakaway, but couldn’t hold on to it and he was able to chip the rebound back over me. Up 9-3 with a few minutes left, something happened at the other end and, in the confusion, a little shot was put towards the other end of the net and trickled in without my actually going for it. We capped off the scoring with another goal and time expired for our first victory of the season, 10-4.

Looking at the standings so far (before today’s game), there were three undefeated teams (4-0, 3-0, 2-0 due to byes), three teams at 1-2, and two teams without a win (both at 0-3, one of them being us). In our three losses we played both the 4-0 team and the 3-0 team and one of the 1-2 teams, so my learning curve was being implemented by the two best teams in the league. We beat one of the other 1-2 teams today, have a bye next week, and then get the other undefeated team (albeit 2-0, and we’ll see how they did this week) the week after at 5pm (so we get to deal with the sun again). Our current goal is to win out and try an sneak into the playoffs, we’ll give it our best shot.

2012-366 Day 77 – Songfest

And boom goes the dynamite, lost one of my Final Four picks in the first round yesterday. This is actually getting to be kind of awesome in a horror show way. Enough about March Madness, it’s time for the show.

I mentioned that Jess and I got to partake in one of our favorite traditions on Thursday night, visiting Pepperdine’s Songfest. I don’t remember a specific number, but this is approximately the seventh consecutive year we’ve gone out there for the show. Our friend Dan plays percussion for the show every year and he had some extra tickets lo those many years ago, and we’ve made it a point to go ever since because we had so much fun.

To give you an idea of what is going on, the various groups at Pepperdine (mostly fraternities and sororities) can put together an approximately 10 minute act featuring singing and choreography around a given theme. This year’s theme was “Off the Clock,” and featured acts about inventing, baking, graffiti, a spelling bee, reading, music, video games, and camping. This was one of the biggest shows we’ve seen with seven student groups and a non-competing faculty and staff group. In between performances a set of hosts come out and do a musical number and where there have been six in the past, this year they expanded to eight (which I will say seemed a little too busy for a smallish stage). In all, there’s a lot of fun and a lot of music and dancing, with some very creative stories being told.

I will say that over seven years the hosts have been pretty uniformly wonderful. They do a great job picking a fantastic set of people to guide you through the night (although sometimes the material they have to work with can be a little weak). They actually have videos of last years performances on youtube, so you can check them out. A couple of the hosts usually carry over from year to year, so it’s always fun to see them again (we had one woman we saw host for four straight years, got to be like an old friend by the end of it even though we never spoke to her).

As for the acts themselves, the first group got the show started very strongly, with Jess and I both commenting that it was the strongest choreography we’d yet seen. Their version of “Mr. Roboto” was probably the best choreographed Songfest song I’d ever seen (although it was very close to one year when the students made a beating heart on stage by alternating going up and down . . . you know you probably had to be there). We’ve had years where the first act set the bar very high and then no one was able to catch up, and, while the tension did build a little bit heading towards the end of the first half of the show, thankfully this was not one of those years.

The final student act before intermission opened on a spelling bee and featured an appropriately nerdy protagonist (actually, there were A LOT of nerdy protagonists across the productions, seriously like 200 pairs of glasses were used across all the acts). The combination of a solid use of spelling songs (“ABC” and “Respect”), some really good comedy work, and an ace in the hole soloist on the final song (where everyone just went “Woah!”) made them the new leader for Jess and me going into the break.

There were a couple clever literary references in the first act back after intermission, but the best was actually saved for last as both the final student group and the faculty, staff, and alumni group both hit it out of the park. The students had a video game theme and great guy and girl leads, and an awesome rendition of “The Mob Song” from Beauty and the Beast. The faculty, staff, and alumni had a small group, but they were certainly mighty, and had a fantastic Scooby Doo-ish scene. The also were the winners of Jess’ annual challenge to Dan, where she makes him identify the one song that he would hate normally but actually has a fun time when playing it (this year it was “Life’s a Happy Song.” All hail the sandpaper blocks).

We had a great time and would highly recommend anyone to go check it out. Thanks again to Dan for hooking us up again this year, hopefully he gets some rest tomorrow because Songfest week is always a brutal one for him schedule-wise.
