2012-366 Day 86 – Plateau

You know the old joke where it’s hard for men to ask for directions? I’ve never been much for that one, perhaps as a life-long student I’ve learned the value of seeking instruction. That being said, there is a substantial difference between seeking direction and seeking a starting point.

I’ve arrived at a very comfortable place in life. Happily married, two (2!) good jobs in a time where people struggle to find one, owner of a condo and a car, living in L.A. with a great church and two attendant great sports ministries to play in. My substantive complaint, then, may seem petty and reek of #firstworldproblems, but it still remains: what do I do next?

Now, lest you believe that this perhaps echos the plaintive cry of the youth in summer (“I’m bored.”), I should inform you that I have lined up several options (Which, incidentally, is why I never uttered those words growing up as a kid. My parents’ response was invariably, “I can find you something to do.”). Unfortunately the problem is a sort of “paralysis by analysis,” what do I want to do first? It’s a lot easier for me to sit around and play games and watch TV rather than make any substantive attempt to get these options off the ground. And that is perhaps the trickiest part, most of these activities will require some initial background investment of work before anyone can see the results, so even if I (have) started some, it will be a while before any benefit will be reaped.

Herein lays the advantage of having started this blog project: rather than idly kicking around the idea that I’ve got to get moving again and then moving on, I can instead write a blog post about it and then have the reminder to myself preserved in cyberspace. So self, let’s start getting a move on. People are going to be expecting things out of you (again) now.
