2012-366 Day 135 – Secret Project and Dodgers Game

I’m working on a secret project this week, one of which I will be more than happy to share all the details of when it is complete. That being said, this is both your tease and an excuse for why I’ll be having shorter posts this week (I also have a bunch of papers to grade before Friday’s Final for my class, but that’s an excuse for another time).

Jess and I will also be attending our first Dodgers game in over a year and a half (due to our McCourt boycott of last season) tomorrow, since McCourt is gone and they are offering the one bobblehead that I NEED (you know I needs me an Orel Hershiser bobblehead!). Pretty much the only non-playoff sporting event promotion that could get me to ditch the Bible study. As all my formative professional baseball memories are of the 1988 season, I will be proud to have a Bulldog bobblehead to call my own tomorrow.

2012-366 Day 134 – Weekend Wrap Up V

Wow, we’re already to the fifth installment of the Weekend Wrap Up, time flies. Busy week followed by an even busier weekend.

Monday (5/7) – Interview Advice: In the class I teach, since it is a general skills computing class, one of the assignments I give is to create/update their resume as a project. We then spend about 15 minutes in class where I give them some of my resume tips, and it seems to be a big success. This semester’s resume day was Friday, and it seemed to be well received. I always enjoy that one.

Tuesday (5/8) – Suspicious: The contest has drawn to a close, and the winners should be announced shortly. If all stands as it did the final day, we’ll end up in second place, which is a respectable finish out of 13 teams. I’ll let you know what happens.

Wednesday (5/9) – Pictures II: I’ll start collecting new pictures for the next post when I get my new phone, which brings us to . . .

Thursday (5/10) – Cellphone: New phone comes out Friday, and I think it’s time to finally take the plunge. I’m looking forward to getting my new toy.

Friday (5/11) – Rehearsal: We’ll cover this whole weekend in the next paragraph.

Saturday (5/12) – Wedding I: We wrapped up a busy week this morning with a nice Mother’s Day breakfast attended by some of the family from the wedding (as well the honorary French family) (unrelated to the wedding, we spent the afternoon with Jess’ mom today) (hey, look, a triple parenthesis aside!). Between the rehearsal, the wedding, and the breakfast, I’ve made more trips to Santa Clarita (actually past it) in the past three days than I had in the last year and a half. The ceremony was very lovely, and Jess and I took it upon ourselves to try and insure that it went as smoothly as possible. My official position was sound guy for the wedding, which I made the best of despite some limited equipment. Overall, everyone seemed happy with the job we did and the night went extremely well. It was fantastic to see all the family in one place and we all had fun catching up.

2012-366 Day 133 – Wedding I

And it is now time for our first wedding of two in the next month. My sister is getting married today, although my jobs today will only be running music for the wedding, setting up, and tearing down. I’ll let you know how it goes later, but, for now, I’ll see you on the other side.

2012-366 Day 132 – Rehearsal

So my sister is getting married to her boyfriend of seven years tomorrow, so the afternoon/evening was dedicated to a wedding rehearsal and dinner. To make sure we got out there on time and not worry about the Friday 5/14 freeway traffic, we headed out after I was done teaching this morning and then went out for lunch and saw Avengers (which was awesome, but I’ll go into that more some other time). It was a nice break heading into an extremely busy weekend. We’ll be doing short posts for the next couple days, in case you haven’t already figured that out . . .

2012-366 Day 131 – Cellphone

It’s that time of the (every two) year(s) again, where I start looking at upgrading my phone (well, I’ve actually been looking to upgrade for at least six months now, but was waiting for Sprint to get a phone with the latest version of Android . . . nerd talk, nerd talk, nerd talk . . . and they’re finally out this month). I always tell people that my cell phone is one of the places where I buy top of the line because it’s an item that I use everyday (although, oddly enough, not for calling people), and I’m willing to invest more upfront to ensure high quality throughout my experience with the phone. In fact my current phone still works quite well, although the internal memory is pretty close to full and I did have to do a full body transplant on it when I dropped it down the stairs.

I had initially set my heart on the Galaxy Nexus, as it was the first announced Android 4.0 phone that Sprint was coming out with. It had already been released on two other carriers, but the announcement was at the end of last year and it’s just now coming out. Should I wait until the 18th, however, HTC’s answer will come out, with a faster processor, better camera, and better resolution, although it won’t have direct updates from Google like the Nexus and has an altered version of the operating system that many regard as inferior?

Who am I kidding, they both cost the same, we know what I’m going to pick here. To quote Tim “The Tool Man” Taylor, “More power!” I can always root it and put the stock operating system on anyway, as soon as someone puts it out there (the joys of being a techie).

2012-366 Day 130 – Pictures II

Feeling a little blah today, but I have some pics on my phone I’ve been wanting to share with you anyway.

Here’s Gatsby’s take on the “Most Interesting Cat in the World” pose. I sub-titled it, “I don’t always throw up, but when I do, I do it right before you are hosting your Bible Study.” Gatsby is more commonly in what we call the “dainty kitty” pose, where he has both front paws out in front of him and crossed at what would be the wrist on us human-folk.

Jess called me in the office the other day to show me this. If you can’t tell from the size (you should be able to see it if you enlarge it), it’s a baby praying mantis. Neither of us had seen one before, and, after I failed several times, Jess was able to get a good picture of it. It was perfectly happy chilling on our screen, and has since wandered off to do whatever it is mantises do.

And this is dinner tonight (well, not this one, this one was lunch on Monday). There’s a cool new place that just opened up right off campus called PizzaRev. It’s like the Chipotle/Subway of pizza, where you choose your sauce, cheese, and toppings and then they cook it for you in a 500+ degree oven in a few minutes. It’s a great idea and tastes pretty darn good too. It has yet to become over-crowded and busy, so get down there if you want to get in on the ground floor.

2012-366 Day 129 – Suspicious

Jess’ office recruited me into a program sponsored through the school promoting physical fitness (I was the “ringer” since I already do running, soccer, karate, ultimate frisbee, etc). Over the course of approximately two months, we were supposed to track our activities, with 30 minutes earning you a star for the day and a 60 minute cap. The number of stars and minutes were then averaged over your team members and added together to come up with a team score. The team leader board was open to all and you can check out who is on each team, but only your team can see your individual numbers.

Now, there are no checks and balances on this system, the website will gleefully accept any input and post it to your total. I took this as a personal challenge and have made sure to do at least 60 minutes of activity everyday over the last 57 days, earning a perfect 57 stars and 60 minute average. The rest of my team has been doing quite well, and we spent the majority of the time period dueling for first place with another team, constantly leapfrogging each other.

That was until last Friday, when Jess was on the phone with her office while we were at the Psychology softball game and was informed that we had been jumped and were in second place by nearly 10 points. Keep in mind how the scoring works, an average in two categories (stars and minutes) over all the people. Now also take into account that when I checked online it wasn’t the team we were dueling with who overtook us, but the third place team, which had been over 10 points behind us in the first place. They achieved a 20 point swing in one day, so either one or two of their team members had not entered anything and did it all at once, or something very suspicious was going on.

Since we can’t see their individual totals, we have no way of knowing what actually occurred. A request to check it out was filed with the people running the program (especially since they made another substantial jump today, the last day of the program), though I don’t expect anything to come of it. I will content myself that our team did very well and did so fair and square, and I will always come down on the side of honor and integrity over winning.

2012-366 Day 128 – Interview Advice

Yes, this is a follow up to my Resume Advice post from a couple weeks ago, as we conducted the interviews attached to the resumes we reviewed. Identities will, of course, be kept well secret, as it’s the content that is important anyway. As one of the few people who actually likes being interviewed, I’ll be throwing in some of my own experiences as well as dealing with the errors of today.

1) It’s not a sprint – We had four interviews today, one of approximately forty minutes, one about a half an hour, and two a bit over fifteen minutes each. Want to guess the order of preference we are leaning towards? That’s right 40, 30, 15, and 15. We had nineteen questions, a little time for introductions and job descriptions at the beginning, and some time for Q and A at the end. Considering the overhead for asking the questions and the bookend intro and ending portions, we definitely should not be averaging LESS than a minute per question. Avoid responses like, “No.”

2) Do your homework – I don’t expect you to know every little detail about who we are and what we do, but when we ask you what about the job description appealed to you, your response should not be to pick up the job description and read it to yourself for over 30 seconds. Furthermore, if you just read a job description which contained the acronym “OCR” in it seven times, you should at least reference it in your response. It was obvious which of the applicants had looked into what we might be asking about and which ones were coming in by the seat of their pants.

3) Be a little vulnerable – If the interview panel asks you what you have disliked about any of your previous positions, your answer should never be, “Nothing.” It’s easy to think of your interviewers as a robotic panel spitting out questions and recording responses, but one should never forget they are human beings, and they know that EVERYONE has gotten frustrated at a job in one aspect or another. Even if it’s something minor to moderate (and to be honest, it probably should be, this isn’t the forum to come clean about the sexual harassment you’ve been undergoing at the hands of your CEO – TO BE CLEAR, THIS DID NOT HAPPEN TODAY), you need to come up with something lest the panel assume that you are totally being phony with them, willing to say anything to get the job (and at this point, you are).

4) Show and tell – We’re going to segue to one of my interviews here (specifically my first for Admissions and Records). In going for an first level Information Technology Consultant position, I wanted to demonstrate how experienced and well rounded I was. Anticipating that the panel might ask for an example of some documentation I had produced or even just having it to bring up on my own at the end (and having recently created some good documentation for setting up some Accessibility software the campus was installing), I brought several copies with me to the interview. The question came up in the interview and my response was not a listing of items that I had documented, but instead a physical example of that topic which I handed to each of the interview panel. I also listed off other documentation projects I had done, but I have to imagine it was surprising to have someone hand you an example of what you are looking for. We ask this question on our interview panels and I keep waiting for someone to pull the same trick, but I have so far been disappointed.

5) Experience counts – It was pretty easy to tell that the shorter interviews were the product of the interviewees not having a lot of experience in an interview setting. Obviously the main way to get more interview experience is to go on more interviews, but in this job market that may be challenging. Another option is to find someone you know that is good at interviewing and/or works in an HR setting and ask them if you could borrow an hour of their time to help you practice your interview skills. You can go all out with a fake position and interview panel (if they agree, of course) or even just go out for coffee and have a back and forth, but just putting in the reps is going to make you better at interviewing. Confidence is vital in an interview setting and, if you don’t have it naturally (if you do, awesome), then it can, to some degree, be taught through experience.

2012-366 Day 127 – Weekend Wrap Up IV

Well that was quite the packed weekend, and it didn’t even feature any official ceremonies like next week (which is pretty much dedicated to my sister’s wedding and Mother’s Day). I might even turn in early after I get this done and reconstitute all the paraphernalia (keys, wallet, phone, etc.) that has ended up all over the house from all the activities of the weekend.

Monday (4/30) – The Raven: Haven’t really given this movie a second thought since I wrote this post, so I guess that says something about my final verdict on it. It was entertaining enough to sit through, but not thoughtful enough to dwell on. Look forward to a review of Avengers as soon as all the group is available to see it (might be a week or two for that).

Tuesday (5/1) – Resolution Update and Special Announcement: Nothing’s really changed here. Haven’t decided on New York yet, though Jess was taking a deeper look into it earlier. Definitely not going to be cheap.

Wednesday (5/2) – 2012-366ers II: Again, we’ll check back in with them a bit further down the road.

Thursday (5/3) – Summer Break: Class went very well on Friday, only one class to teach left and then the final. They also reviewed me at the end of class Friday, but I won’t see the results of those until the summer. I’ve been blessed with some great reviews in the past, and can only hope that the trend continues, seeing as I haven’t really changed my teaching style at all.

Friday (5/4) – Failure: Coming up with the Hawaii clause (posts count if made before midnight Hawaii time) helped me feel better about missing a day by an hour, however I’m going to have to set an alarm on my phone or something for the weekend since those are the times I tend to forget.

Saturday (5/5) – Recovery: Again, with such a busy weekend, the posts have been pretty short. I apologize to those expecting more content (although I doubt there’s that many of you out there) and will try to do better going forward. Here’s the picture that Jess took I promised yesterday of the grilled cheese bar, which got a reprise as a sandwich bar this afternoon for our friends who came over for lunch and the two final periods of the Kings game.

That is all for today, now to get some rest for a busy week/weekend ahead.

2012-366 Day 126 – Recovery

Another busy day and I almost forgot again. Jess says that I should count yesterday since I still posted on the same waking day, I figured after I posted that I’m still going to count it and have made the official rule that as long as I post before midnight in Hawaii I’m still good. Hopefully I won’t have to rationalize it again.

This morning started with my Blue Belt test for Karate, which I’m happy to announce I passed. Jess and I then had lunch at San Carlo Deli and then shopped for our grilled cheese night with Keith and Cathy. We had a great night and a lot of good grilled cheese (zzzzzz. . .) and hang out time. I have a picture Jess took, but I’ll put it up tomorrow in the weekend update as I’m not near it right now.
