2012-366 Day 186 – Fourth of July

Happy Fourth of July everyone! Had a wonderful day with friends capped off with a really good fireworks display in Simi (along with a bit of adventure figuring out where we were going to watch it from). I am always grateful to be an American, and it’s awesome to have a day to celebrate our great country. I’m going to go take it easy, so here are some pictures from our fireworks show.

2012-366 Day 185 – Memory

Having just pushed our way past the halfway point, I’m starting to become more and more concerned with accidentally repeating myself in one of these blog posts. Now it’s one thing to repeat a theme, that’s fine, especially in a project with so many entries. My real worry is in wholesale repeating a blog post or idea (although, who knows, maybe the second go-round would be superior?), as I have a hard enough time keeping track of the previous week and things coming up, let alone 180+ previous blog posts.

In general, I feel that I have an interesting memory structure that probably mirrors a lot of people out there (I’ve only recently recognized that last part). My brain doesn’t like to keep much extraneous information on hand, so if I don’t repeat it or have an anchor for it, it gets flushed pretty quick. Provide it some context, however, and information comes rolling back. That’s why I’ve always been such a good test taker, the test questions themselves usually provide enough context that I can retrieve the information so long as I have read or heard it at some point in the recent past. It seems to apply mostly to written communication and recall, however, as reminding me of a conversation generally does not have the same results.

As for events-based memory, I generally have to rely on pictures for those kinds of memories. If I have a picture of something, I can generally remember it fairly well even without having seen that picture for a while. Actually, even repeated discussion can help with my recall of a situation (although those are generally the more memorable events, considering that we are discussing them again), although new elements sometimes creep in on the retelling. Having read several memory studies in the past few years (okay, articles about the memory studies) have really driven home the fact that my memory is not as unusual as I might have once believed. Our memories are not these inviolate bastions of permanency that we might think, but instead electrical impulses that can be bent and shaped more by the current context than by what actually happened.

It used to bother me quite a bit that I could not remember large swaths of growing up, the tired minutiae of the day to day. I envied those who had detailed memory of everything (or so it seemed), and I have only recently realized that my brain is actually being efficient. The major events are still there (although perhaps a bit cloudy in detail, and I never have been any good at remembering specific conversations), and any events that I focus on and repeat I can move to a deeper level of memory with some more detail, but the minor events and conversations all have been cleared to keep plenty of room available for what happens next.

I guess the moral of the story is: if you want to have a better chance of me remembering something, you should give it to me in writing.

2012-366 Day 184 – Superhero Movies

With The Amazing Spider-man coming out this week, we are officially 2/3rds of the way through the major superhero movies this summer (Avengers, Spider-man, and Dark Knight Rises). Of course, being a major Batman fan, the one I am most looking forward to is the Dark Knight. I’ve mentioned how much I enjoyed Avengers, and I’ll go see Spider-man (probably in 3D, looks like it will be worth it), but I’m truly excited to go see the conclusion to Christopher Nolan’s trilogy. Less than a month to go now for that one.

As for Spider-man, I’m disappointed they felt the need to reboot everything (honestly, I feel that I’ve seen so many interpretations of the Spider-man origin that I could recite it upside down and backwards), although the direction they’ve taken the franchise does look promising. In fact, I think I’m okay with reboots in general as long as it really condenses the origin. We’ve seen it, we know it, just give us what changed.

After Dark Knight Rises it will be back to waiting for the next crop of Marvel movies and dreading the next DC movie (whatever that may be). Hopefully DC can turn it around on the movie front, because, outside of Batman, the movies they’ve been putting out (::cough:: Green Lantern ::cough:: Jonah Hex ::cough:: – yes, I’ve seen them both) have been terrible.

2012-366 Day 183 – Resolution Update

The halfway mark arrives on the same day as a resolution update, hard to believe we’re already to that point.

1) One blog post (long or short) every day this year. – It only took me six months to realize that it’s kind of silly to be keeping track of this one, since obviously an update is going to mean that I’m still going. I guess I can still say it though – On track.

2) Lose 20 pounds. – Been maintaining, but need to start losing again. – On track.

3) Run 600 miles. – An absolutely brutal month for running, although I certainly kept active with karate, volleyball, and Ultimate Frisbee. The heat starting up certainly didn’t help. Am going to set up a training plan for the Disneyland Half Marathon in 2(!) months, so that should help, but I’m not sure I’m going to make it all the way to 600. – Behind. 187.5/600 = 31.25%

4) Complete 5th Gup Green belt test by end of year. – Testing for Blue-Green (7th Gup) on Saturday. I’m feeling things starting to come together a bit more on the fitness side, which is helping me get the techniques down better. Looking forward to starting to refine things, and having a bit more time for outside practice again. – On track. (Actual test maybe the first week of January with the new four month cycles.)

5) Complete first novel. – I really should take this one out, but things still pop into mind occasionally. – Behind.

2012-366 Day 182 – Weekend Wrap Up XI

A weird week that both was slow but flew by, followed by a Saturday that exhibited much the same pattern. We did end the day by going to an ice cream shop in Simi called Sub Zero that mixes the ice cream as a liquid and then freezes it using liquid nitrogen. It was good, but pricey, not something I’d do on a regular basis. A great science thing for kids though. Anyway, on to the updates.

Sunday (6/24) – Volleyball Game 3: No volleyball this upcoming week, as this was the one we selected to celebrate the Fourth of July. Yeah, we probably should have taken Father’s Day off and left the Fourth alone due to it’s midweek status, but what’s done is done. Am having dinner with my parents tomorrow, so we can just pretend we switched the days.

Monday (6/25) – Office Move: I told my boss that once my Mountain Dew bottles moved, the whole thing was official and I wasn’t moving back. That was actually a pretty heavy box since all but one of those bottles is still full.

Tuesday (6/26) – New Office: I am enjoying my new office, it does have a ton more space. Still getting used to that aspect, but it does make my games of trash can basketball with my lunch wrappers a little more exciting.

Wednesday (6/27) – The Cloud: One thing I am uncertain if I was clear on: if you don’t care about the information you are storing (i.e. it’s not sensitive), then the Cloud is a fantastic invention that improves so many aspects of storing data. Seems the post might have taken on a bit more negative tone than I intended. I use the cloud for many things, particularly music and moving pictures and files between my phone and home and work computers, and it is a great time saver for me. Using the example of taking pictures on my phone, using the cloud cuts out three or four steps in getting those pictures into my blog posts (thank you, Dropbox).

Thursday (6/28) – Dead Heat: Allyson won her 200 meter final and is guaranteed a spot on the Olympic team, but the 100 meter result is still up in the air. A decision is due Sunday morning, though I wouldn’t be surprised to see her step aside in that event for her teammate and training partner.

Friday (6/29) – Teaching III: I do love teaching, but I am enjoying the break as well. I occasionally forget that the teachers need the break between semesters just as much as the students do, if not more.

2012-366 Day 181 – Teaching III

Off for the summer, but I got the offer to teach my class again next semester (budget, etc. permitting). I also picked up my reviews from last semester this week (I’m sure they’ve been sitting in my box over there for a while now) and received the usual scores (mid 6 averages on a scale that tops at 7) with 5 or 6 written comments. The theme for my written comments the semester before was that they wished I taught all their classes, this year’s theme was that I knew what I was talking about. The two negative comments I got was that I didn’t deviate far enough from the book (which I do use as a skeleton, but add on top of. If you just read the slides you’ll miss the things I’m adding) and that I didn’t assign enough homework (okay?). I did get my all time favorite comment this semester, however, and I present it here paraphrased and edited for language (the entire process is anonymized, so I don’t know who left it):

This is one of the few professors I’ve had who:
1) Knows their [stuff]
2) Isn’t a condescending [a]hole
3) Actually does a good job of explaining concepts

I kind of feel bad for them if that has been their experience at school, but was glad that I got the chance to give them a good experience. It’s gotten to the point where I look forward to receiving my evaluations, although I am not looking forward to when a class blindsides me with some negativity I don’t notice (I think I’m safe for now).

In what has been a busy week education-wise, Jess and I signed up for a class together through the fee-waiver program that aims to tell the real story of forensic anthropology (and not the Bones-ified version). Think anyone will get it if I tell them to call me Agent Booth? I’m certain there will be several blog stories coming from the class in the future (it starts in late August).

2012-366 Day 180 – Dead Heat

No, that’s not the title of my latest suspense novel (or Richard Castle’s for that matter, although I imagine it soon will be), but the technical term for a tie in the world of track and field. Why bring that up? Well, if you’ve been following the U.S. Olympic trials recently (c’mon, surely you have?), you may have noticed that the third member of the Women’s 100 meter sprint team has yet to be decided, because the third place finisher could not be determined. Jess and I were actually watching live (well, time-shifted live) when it happened to cheer on Allyson Felix (did I mention we went to school with her? Oh yeah, I did, here).

At the time, it was actually determined that Allyson had finished in fourth place by .001 seconds (which always reminds me of Jerry Seinfeld’s bit on the Olympics (particularly starting at 1:05 in the clip, although the whole thing is spot on):

It actually wasn’t until two days later (because it actually hadn’t been decided until a day later) that I found out the third place spot was in a dead heat and they had to figure out something to do about it. And they had to figure out something to do about it because they didn’t have any rules in place to handle the situation (a male sprinter in another article I read said that he had been told ties were impossible). Then I came across this article and video on the Sports Illustrated website (actually it was in my RSS feed, but same difference) and it was incredibly enlightening. So enlightening, in fact, that I’m going to stop here today so you can go read it.

2012-366 Day 179 – The Cloud

Spent most of the day at the second annual IT fair on campus, which featured a couple speakers, some vendor booths, lunch, and a raffle (which I did not win). The first speaker spent a bit over an hour discussing the Cloud, saying what it was, what the benefits and drawbacks were, and attempting to answer the question “Is information on the Cloud private?” (Short answer, no.) Most of this information I knew already, but the speaker was pretty good and it was nice to have a refresher. The second speaker was essentially a 45 minute commercial for Google’s products (which in the meantime I broke the Google Play and Gmail apps on my tablet while doing an update, I was tempted to ask her to fix it afterwards. Sadly she was in PR and not IT, so I doubt it would have got me far).

The Cloud discussion (especially the privacy portion) reminded me that I should take a post and write down the speech I give to my students every semester (well, not verbatim, but just get the ideas out there). A quick sidebar for those of you wondering: the general definition of the Cloud is any information that you store on the internet where you do not control the servers or storage space. Most often people using the cloud are using a product provided by Amazon, Google, or Apple, with newer companies like Dropbox coming on fast. With some understanding of the construction (obviously those in my class would have a bit more background) of the Internet, and, in this case, the Cloud, you can begin to talk about privacy. The privacy discussion, however, has actually been around since the start of the internet and ties closely into privacy concerns and email or text messaging.

How’s that, you ask? Keep in mind how email and text messaging work and how that ties into the Cloud. Emails and texts both go to a central server before being rerouted to the recipient (in email’s case, it’s actually two servers, your sending server and the recipient’s receiving server). It is rare that you have control over either server, and that means that someone else has setup and controls the information flowing through that server. It is trivial for them to copy all information going through that server, and requires only a bit more time to mine that information. Economies of scale do help privacy in this case, it is far less likely that Google will be individually noting all activity across all of gmail than someone’s self stood up email server. The same thing with text messages, except this time you are guaranteed not to have control over the server in question. This applies to the Cloud as well, whatever you place on it, the server has an IT guy who has access to your information. Whether or not they ever do anything with that information is merely a question of interest, not ability.

So do we panic and pull everything off the web? The speaker today and myself both have the same conclusion: no. Just realize that everything you place in an email, send in a text, or store in the cloud should be treated as public information because it easily could become just that. If you have a deep, burning secret, you should never place it in one of these repositories, because the copies that are generated can easily get beyond your control. About the only safe way to transmit or store any information like this is to encrypt it before it goes into the mechanisms involved, which adds another layer for any snoops to crack (granted, if it is weak encryption, it will be cracked).

So, as I tell my students every semester, never put anything in an email, text, or on the cloud that you are not ready to have brought out in public. The odds of anything coming out accidentally are pretty small, but they do exist. And if you are involved in anything shady, those odds go up substantially, as suddenly the people coming after you can ask for those copies that the companies control and not just get them directly from you.

Speaking of proprietary information (sort of), let me save you 65 dollars should your pet ever decide to chew open a glow necklace and eat the contents (Yes, this information should go in the Stupid Cat post, but I keep forgetting to write it down and I’m not going to make you go back to look at an updated post when you’re already here). The liquid inside a glow necklace is generally not toxic, give your pet (in our case the cat) some milk, wet food, or tuna juice to help cut the flavor. Make sure they don’t have any on their fur so they don’t reacquire it later. As long as the pet isn’t throwing up repeatedly, they should be fine and it will pass.

There, now you can save your money rather than calling the ASPCA poison extortion (er, control) line. Keep an eye on your pet though, and take them into the vet if any other symptoms occur, as I am not responsible for anything else going on with your situation. (Is it sad that I felt I need to put a disclaimer here on the off chance that someone discovers this blog and something else is wrong with it but tries to blame me? I actually considered pulling the section altogether when I thought of that.)

2012-366 Day 178 – New Office

Settled into the new office, just like the old one but bigger. The walls are a bit plain now, and I moved the computer screens off center since my door switched sides and I wouldn’t be able to see out in the old configuration.

Of course, that’s not the important part, as I already did a post on my decor in the old office, which had to be moved over as well. I changed the layout a bit to generate more space (you know, in case I have to put any more work items up there), and used the top area. I’m still going to have quite the headache if we have a major earthquake and I don’t get under my desk fine (I will, however, have plenty of fermented Mt. Dew to keep me alive while they dig me out).

The two big new additions are my Orel Hershiser bobble head and my new Star Wars Stitch (this time as General Grevious). Been trying to keep things stable for now, lest it overrun my office.

2012-366 Day 177 – Office Move

Wow, what a Monday. Spent the first two hours getting people setup after they did the final rounds of carpeting for our office. Then spent the rest of the day making my old office look like this:

I haven’t finished unpacking in my new office, I’ll try and get a picture up when that is done. After a highly active weekend between karate and volleyball, and moving equipment and office items all day, I’m pretty spent (although I have to go do a sparring class in karate tonight as there are only a couple weeks before the next test).

I do like my new office, it has a bit more elbow room. Is it still a “corner office” if the corner is internal to the building?
