2012-366 Day 205 – Hillside Lodge I

It was a dark and stormy night. All right, it wasn’t all that stormy but it was plenty dark as we were nearing the new moon (which turned out to be plenty handy when we went stargazing a few nights later). It was also on the outskirts of San Francisco, Belmont to be precise, so it was kinda . . . I don’t know . . . overcast? In our quest to find lodging we contacted what we thought was a local hotel but turned out to be an arm of Expedia, and it referred us to the Hillside Lodge. The Lodge was purported to be a land of milk and honey where all of our needs could be taken care of, or even a simple place where weary travelers could lay their head, a place where pleasant dreams could be had. But those dreams took a turn for the worse . . .

Imagine it a little darker. A little more. A little more than that. Wait, go back a shade. Perfect.

We arrived at the Hillside Lodge after a twenty five minute trip from the restaurant we called from. Situated on the side of a hill (felt like San Francisco already), we pulled into the only remaining spot at the very top of the hill. Upon driving in we noticed that the first door on our left coming in stood open into a dark room. Despite our better judgement, we went to see what awaited us in that gloomy abode . . .

Stare into it’s gloomy heart and see . . . the ice machine? I really should have taken these pictures at night instead of the next morning.

We had discovered the ice machine, but were no closer to our true destination: the hotel office. Scanning the location in the dark several times finally yielded a clue, a single glowing eye staring back at us from the opposite corner of the ice machine’s lair.

Seriously, the Please Ring button glowed at night, I promise.

Yes, we had found the elusive office window tucked into the corner, with only a tiny plexiglass rectangle allowing us communications with the keepers that slept therein.

And the door next to the window. I guess they had to get in and out somehow . . .

The female keeper initially expressed confusion as to our request for a room. This Expedia person had left no notice of our arrival and there was no lodging to be had in their hotel that night. We turned to leave, not quite disappointed at this turn of events as we had passed several other locations where we might rent a bed on the way here, when the door flung open and the male keeper stated that he had no choice but to offer us a room. He invited Brian into the office, slipping the door shut silently behind them. We bid a fond farewell to him, convinced we had seen him for the last time, but waited anyway lest they want us to dispose of the body or something.

Lo and behold not ten minutes later did Brian emerge victorious, with two sets of keys to rooms on opposite ends of the same side of the hotel. We theorized that they used a secret button to dump whatever occupants whom had already inhabited the rooms into whatever foul pits festered below the hotel, but figured since it was late and no one was likely to arrive after us looking for a room, we were probably pretty safe. And I’m guessing they went on some sort of seniority system as to who got dumped anyway, so hopefully they dumped whoever had been the longest first. Anyway, I’m getting off track here, let’s pick up after we pulled the luggage out of the car and prepare to open the door to our room for the first time . . .

Actually, we’ll do that tomorrow. Come on back for part II.

What I have been up to

Without a doubt, this has been the busiest 6 months I have ever had. If you follow me on facebook then you saw the following post after my last event –

“Final tally since January – 2 Weddings, 2 Bridal Showers, 1 Bachelorette Party, 2 Rehearsal dinners, 3 Baby showers, 3 family vacations, 3 birthday parties, 1 funeral, 1 award ceremony, plus my normal day job which was the worst semester I have ever had. And, as of this moment, I am officially DONE!!!!”

Now recaping these events would have been great to do while they were happening and would have used time (and state of coherency) that I didn’t have. To do so now would be far too long of a post. So I’ll just show you some of the highlights:

First there was that detail that Matt and I had bought a condo so we were fixing it up and making it home. Here is an example, I have a small kitchen so storage is an issue. We bought a garden trellis and painted it white and added knobs and hooks, then hung it on the wall.

and voila! Kitchen storage!

There are lots of other things that Matt and I have done with the condo, but again, we’re  highlighting here. Someday though I expect Matt to do a whole post on things our friends have drawn on our chalkboard wall. It’s easily my favorite thing we have done. 😉

In the realm of personal projects, I made this from a reusable shopping bag I got at the 99-cent and a cork board from Target. I cut up the bag, took out the stitching until I had just the front panel. Then I used spray adhesive to put it on. It’s the perfect way to display our Disney pins:

Now on to some of the events:

Cathy’s Bridal Shower was a kitchen theme and I was heading up decorations. This is what I came up with:

Who said a blender can’t be a vase?

Funny story. I made this kitchen utensil garland and thought it was so cute! Then I went to make my macaroni and cheese only to realize I didn’t have any kitchen utensils like spoons, cheese graters, measuring cups. Whoops!

The guest book where people left their recipe cards. I found that material in San Diego and bought it because it was just so cute. It has kitchen and baking tips printed all over it. The chalkboard is actually a 99-cent cutting board that I painted with left over chalkboard paint. (It didn’t stay on the plastic too well, probably good for one or two uses only, but for less than a dollar, who needs more? If I was making one to last I’d use wood and prime it first I think.)

BTW, The gift baskets were beautifully made by Kristi. I was annoyed I wrote the games and therefore couldn’t win them.

Now for the thing I was most proud of, my kitchen towel cake.

Everything on it is for the kitchen. The layers are towels (supported by cut up cereal boxes), the base is a pizza pan. Even the flowers are napkin rings! I was so excited when I found the heart shaped whisk for the topper. Then Matt found the heart shaped measure spoons that was the perfect final touch. I was really proud of how it turned out! I bet you are wondering how I got them to stayed fanned open like that. I pretended I was MacGyver and came up with this:

And you can’t even see the paper clip!

After the shower comes the bachelorette party.

Sorry, that is the only photo I am allowed to show you. We signed a contract 😉 I will say that you can read about Matt’s awesome Bachelorette Scavenger Hunt here.

Of course, then there is the wedding itself.

(Picture shamelessly stolen from Brian’s facebook page)

Now, there were other events too and with most events comes cooking, which I have been known to do from time to time:

This was for another baby shower. I cannot take credit for the tablescape, but I did help with preparing the food.

These were quite the hit at a different baby shower: Bacon wrapped little smokies topped with brown sugar. Really though, Is there anyway those would have turned out bad?

.

And with events like these comes gifts, these are a few that I made (don’t ask me why, when I was this busy I decided to add “handmade gifts” to that list. I loved making them for my friends though!):

Shopping cart seat covers for 2 different baby showers (I didn’t take a picture of the second one, but it was purple and green with very sweet butterflies, and a butterfly toy). I made sure to add loops to hang toys off of too, so when the child throws the toy out of the cart, mommy isn’t back tracking through Target trying to find it. (The main pattern I used was courtesy of Spindle to Sashes)

I also made a quilt for the little monkey that two of our best friends, Dan and Vicki, are expecting. It’s their first baby and we are so happy for them!

I was really happy with how it came out. All cute and puffy!

Well, there’s a taste of what I have been doing for the past several months. If you haven’t heard from me much, or when you did I seemed scatterbrained (more than usual) or exhausted, that’s why. It’s also why I may spend the next several months sleeping. 🙂

2012-366 Day 204 – Volleyball Game 6

After missing last week for vacation, I returned to lead my team (who had been victorious in my absence, although they did lose the first game by 16 points) and all was going well as we won the first game fairly handily. The whole team was there for the first time and our rotation worked pretty well, winning 25-16. The second game was a back and forth affair which we came out on the short end of by a score of 25-23. The third game saw their hitters get on track and we couldn’t pull it out, losing 25-20.

In all, we did very well considering we were trying to incorporate everyone on the fly. Now is the time to be getting the team used to each other, and the team we were playing was very good, in third place right behind us (and obviously now passing us). I think we can get them if we need to in the playoffs. We’re two thirds of the way through the regular season, so we’re heading into the home stretch. It was good to get back out and play again.

Oh yeah, Jess and I went and saw Dark Knight Rises this evening after volleyball and it was awesome. Expect a spoiler-laden post sometime later this week.

2012-366 Day 203 – Weekend Wrap Up XIV

We’re safely back from our “North” vacation. Our friends Brian and Dennis joined us in Brian’s Explorer and we took off on Sunday morning up the coast, with the eventual goal of making it to the Oregon border before getting home on Friday night/Saturday morning. We had a lot of fun and got to see a lot of great places, but it was good to be home today and do some resting up from the vacation (isn’t it always like that). More stories to come during the next few blog posts (and even in this one), but for now lets get to the Wrap Up.

Sunday (7/15) – The Coast: Later, in our stop along the Avenue of the Giants, I remembered my favorite beach: the beach along the banks of a river. We just happened to pick the one stop out of eight that featured information on river otters and bordered the Eel River. We took the short hike to the river and were surrounded by the giant trees and peaceful water, with a bridge and just a beautiful setting. We didn’t get to see any otters, but it was just a wonderful slice of heaven on earth.

Monday (7/16) – Adventure: You can look forward to a full blog post on this one in the upcoming week, and I promise it will be a good one.

Tuesday (7/17) – Road Trip Food I: You can also look forward to the second half of this one, with some more good food stops.

Wednesday (7/18) – Comfort Zone: The feelings faded fairly quickly, and there were several places like Ashland that didn’t bother me like that (I actually liked Ashland a lot). Not a place I’d go out and live though, I can’t imagine having that feeling all the time.

Thursday (7/19) – Stargazing: If I can get to do some stargazing by a remote river, I’m pretty sure that’s as close to location heaven as I can get. May have to work on making that happen.

Friday (7/20) – Aurora, Colorado: As more information comes out, the more horrid this tragedy becomes. I’m not looking forward to what the trial is going to do to the victim’s families and survivors. I firmly believe justice will be done, but I pray the process doesn’t do more damage here.

2012-366 Day 202 – Aurora, Colorado

If you know me, you know that I am a Batman fan. Had I not been out on a road trip, I probably would have gone to a midnight showing of Dark Knight Rises (midnight showings used to be a far more regular part of my life, but I don’t make the time as much anymore). Upon hearing the tragic news of the midnight showing shooting in Aurora, Colorado, I was extremely saddened. My heart and prayers are certainly with the survivors, their families, and the families of the victims.

It also has me thinking about all of those people going to a superhero movie to escape and see an uplifting tale of justice (I am assuming here, I haven’t seen it yet), only to wind up on a situation where even a superhero couldn’t predict or intervene short of being right there. The whole thing was over in minutes, over 70 people shot and the gunman arrested in the span of a commercial break.

And what of this gunman? Reports are he’s in his twenties, told one of the officers he was the Joker (I am a little skeptical of this report, but could see it happening), and he surrendered without a struggle immediately afterwards. One person in over three hundred million in the United States decided to perform a heinous act which directly altered hundreds of lives and we were absolutely powerless to stop it. We could only clean up the aftermath and then seek justice in a situation where a true balancing of the scales is impossible.

One of the most heartbreaking stories coming out of this tragedy is that of Jessica Redfield. Her final blog post recounts the horror of her brush with a mall shooting in Toronto, standing where the shooter would be only three minutes later. She died last night in that theater, a horrifying international nexus of bad decisions (none of which were hers) and gun violence.

Unfortunately when I go to reach for answers in this situation I come back with nothing but air. There are gun issues at play here that I can’t even begin to discuss competently at this time, though I am sure more information about how he acquired his weapons and his history is forthcoming. I also can’t touch his mental state or makeup, but we will find out more about that as well. It seems as if the gunman didn’t have any sort of record, so it really seems that as of now there’s no way that this could have been prevented.

What we can be thankful for are the everyday heroes and first responders who quickly apprehended the gunman and treated the wounded there. I can’t imagine the nightmare scenario unfolding: a confused, panicked mob, multiple people in costumes, a gunman with no apparent motive and the advantage of preparation. I saw a note that this incident had the most number of people injured or killed in a mass shooting in the United States, and I find it profoundly sad that we have to have such a “record.”

I’ll admit, I’m being a bit selfish, as the main point of this post was to process through my thoughts on the situation. I don’t think I can truly convey the abhorrence I have for this act or the pain I feel for its victims. I always imagine that my being there could change events, and I know I am most likely wrong. It makes one feel helpless, though, being all these miles away and the best one can do is to pray or make a donation. I hope those actions are sufficient to begin the healing process, that their community can be restored, and that justice can be served.

UPDATE: I cannot speak to the spiritual side of this event as well as this blog posting: So you still think God is a merciful God?!

2012-366 Day 201 – Stargazing

Going to look at stars, will post when I get back.

You know what, I’m going to keep it. There’s nothing like going out into the middle of nowhere and looking up into the heavens to see light that originated thousands (if not more) years ago. Tonight we are in Montague outside of Yreka, and it’s the second largest amount of stars and galaxies that I’ve ever seen. The first largest was on a backpacking trip outside of the Ansel Adams Wilderness when I was a teenager, but this was a worthy sight to see. The paltry handful of stars I see in the city is just so sad after the reminder of what is truly out there in the night sky.

Heightening matters was a lightning storm up on a local mountain ridge which was pretty active, we had to have seen 30-50 flashes in the hour we were out there. We also saw about a dozen shooting stars, although apparently I missed the best one. That’s the sad thing about shooting stars, when you have the entire dome of sky to look at, you may miss one if you’re focused on the wrong section. Between the shooting stars, the lightning, and the plethora (yes, I know how many pinatas that is) of stars, it was a pretty spectacular night.

Sadly I had no way to capture it, as my phone was resting back at home base to recharge. Dennis and Brian captured some great shots on their fancy cameras, and this is one area where I would certainly be tempted to invest in a good photo rig and head out to some desolate places late at night. There are few sights I find so moving as a spectacular night sky, and I am truly grateful for those times where I get to experience one.

2012-366 Day 200 – Comfort Zone

Everyone has places they like to be and places they would rather not be. I’ve always considered myself comfortable pretty much anywhere, with only dangerous areas and events I don’t want to be at really cranking up my discomfort level. I never really imagined that there would be a place that set me on edge just by being there.

That is, until I visited Humboldt. (Sorry, Fern. It’s not personal.)

I don’t know what it is about the area, but even before we parked I was already feeling uneasy. The various shops with occult themes didn’t help, but I think it was the politicizing of even simple stores like the salon with the current Iraqi death toll on the front door. Getting out of the car and seeing the groups of young men in the square cursing at each other and harassing passers by just made it worse. Their exchange with Brian, Dennis, and I (with Brian and Dennis sporting their big cameras):

Them: “Hey, you want to take our picture?”
Us: [ignoring them]
Guy 1: “Hey, do you guys have any weed?”
Guy 2: “They have cameras, of course they have weed.”
Us: [walking away] (Okay, I guess it was kind of a one sided exchange.)

I think I still have a bit of a buzz from those gentlemen. There’s a place for everyone, but there’s also places some people just don’t fit in. I think I found one of mine.

2012-366 Day 199 – Road Trip Food I

If there’s one thing we do well when travelling, it’s eat. Jess and I generally use a combination of Yelp and Food Network when determining where to eat, and it’s served us pretty well the last couple of days on the road. Being on the road, however, meals don’t necessarily match up to a defined breakfast, lunch, and dinner schedule, so I’ll just give you the approximate time of day.

Sunday Morning – McDonalds: Well, you know, we hadn’t really gotten started yet, so I guess this doesn’t count?

Sunday Afternoon – Linn’s: An institution in Cambria, Linn’s is famous for growing a special type of berry that I’m not going to try to spell in this blog (ollala . . . olollie . . . nope, not going to do it). They also have a restaurant that serves American comfort food and desserts. I got the Hearst burger which had local beef, gouda, and roasted garlic aioli on a artisan roll. The roll was probably the best burger bun I’ve had in my life, a type of ciabatta that wasn’t too thick and not too airy. The whole package was quite delicious.

While I am not generally a dessert person, I did sample the Black Magic Cake on the platter that was ordered. I was the first one in on it and almost had my head knocked off by the dark chocolate ganache in it. It was quite good as well, but I’ll let one of the dessert people handle the specifics of it.

Sunday Night – Cannery Row Brewing Company: A late night arrival at the hotel and a quick scouting of the area landed us in one of the places that was still open at that time on a Sunday night. We were handed a late night menu and preceded to take full advantage of it, ordering Guinness battered mini corn dogs, applewood bacon cheddar fries, and a crunch cake. The corn dogs were very good, with just a hint of Guinness flavor (too much would have turned me off) and excellent batter. The applewood bacon fries were excellent, with slab cut bacon chopped up and very good fries, it was perfect late night fare. The crunch cake was disappointing as a cake, but the crunchy parts interspersed made up for it (butter scotch chips, peanuts, oreo pieces, chocolate chips, and a couple other things I don’t remember). The frosting wasn’t great either, but we had more than enough good stuff to go around.

Monday Morning – Crepes: A little crepe place between our hotel and the Monterey Bay Aquarium turned out to be quite the find. I got a good old-fashioned breakfast crepe which happened to be the house special, smoked turkey slices, two eggs, and extra cheese wrapped in a crepe. Everyone else got a good variety of sweet and savory, and they were pretty big, so we were happy with our breakfast choice.

Monday Afternoon – Tollhouse Cookies: In leaving the Aquarium and heading back to retrieve our car to head out for the next stop, we didn’t really budget time in for lunch and wound up just getting some cookies from the Tollhouse shop. This wound up being a mistake, as we would not stop for food again until much later. We learned a lesson as a car this day. The peanut butter cookies were definitely good though.

Monday Night – Boulevard Cafe: This wound up being our only “it is here, so we are eating here” location, and we got pretty lucky with it. I’m not even sure what city we were in, but it’s somewhere near San Francisco. The restaurant serves upscale comfort food, and three out of the four of us ordered a variation of mac and cheese. I had the Italian mac and cheese, which featured mozzarella, italian sausage, and a cream cheese sauce. It was excellent, although I would have liked a little more sausage (I wasn’t particularly shorted, I just really like italian sausage).

Tuesday Morning – Dynamo Donuts: Our first “quirky” spot, there was a bit of an adventure as the first address we were given by a food app was just plain wrong and led us to a different doughnut shop in a, how shall we say, unsavory neighborhood (do not use the address given by tvfoodmaps.com). After rectifying our mistake and covering a large part of the southern peninsula, we made our way to the shop. They make all sorts of unique donuts, including a maple bacon apple doughnut that they are famous for (or is that macon baple doughnut? I’ve heard it both ways ;). We got several donuts and some coffee (I heard reports that the coffee here and at the crepe place the day before was very good as well, I got hot chocolate here), I got a blueberry corn muffin that made a great breakfast. The maple bacon apple was very tasty and had a nice balance of salty to sweet. There was a spiced chocolate which we likened to a chocolate churro with a bit of spice at the end, and a hazelnut chocolate doughnut that was solid.

Tuesday Afternoon – Boudin: The San Francisco classic, Brian and I both had beef chili in a bread bowl. It was good. Can we tell that I’m not going to be a food critic when I grow up?

Tuesday Night – Johnny Garlic’s: Guy Fieri’s (a Food Network personality) original restaurant in Santa Rosa, this place was offbeat and crazy good. Everyone got something they really like, I got a bison and italian sausage (see, I told you) meatloaf sandwich with swiss (actually, gouda or provolone would have made the sandwich even better) and onion straws on a ciabatta bun. Bison is a much lighter meat than I was expecting, and it really allowed the italian sausage to shine through while providing a bit more of a meatiness to the patty (okay, maybe I could work at it a little bit and be a decent critic). I was unimpressed with the garlic fries, but eating the entire sandwich after the bread bowl earlier more than filled me up.

And it is now almost Wednesday morning, so it is time to sign off.

2012-366 Day 198 – Adventure

I have always considered myself pretty unflappable, very stoic, and not prone to be surprised easily. I still am all these things, but I am all these things with a new amusing story to tell. I’ll tell the story some other time, because my technology isn’t working that great tonight and the story is still ongoing, but I am glad that I have these character traits, because lesser men might be crying at this point.

The short, short version for now, because I want to reward you for visiting but also want to go to bed: when on vacation and assuming that you will find some place to stay every night on a road trip, do not assume that there will not be complications along the way.

I also got word on volleyball scores, and my team won without me yesterday, so yay!

2012-366 Day 197 – The Coast

If you’ve known me for any length of time, you probably know that I am not a beach person. I much prefer the mountain environs and the tranquility that usually accompanies them. The beach is usually louder, I dislike sand very much, and it’s generally hard to find shade to get away from the sun. That being said, there are certain beaches that I don’t mind. We visited one today that checked a few of my boxes (Montana de Oro) .

Beach Box 1 – Cliffs: They don’t even have to be particularly tall, as long as I can get above the waterline and look down on the waves.

Beach Box 2 – Caves: Or a cove, basically any place that you can go in and explore. They need to be of a decent size, however, I don’t like small spaces.

Beach Box 3 – Smooth Stones: For skipping. I didn’t know this was on my list until today, but it turned out to be a lot of fun, and they’re just everywhere on that beach.

I’ll have to do some more thinking to see if there are any more boxes, but those are the ones that got addressed today.
