2012-366 Day 295 – Softball Game 6

Well, that was awkward. I got an email this morning reminding me that when I originally set up the schedule, one of the umpires wouldn’t be able to make it to the field until an hour after the games started. Unfortunately three of the coaches regularly umpire, and I was playing in the first game, the second sent the aforementioned reminder email, and the third one is in India on business. After last week (which was resolved this week and all misunderstandings were cleared up, so that was a good thing today), this certainly wasn’t how we wanted to start this week.

Thankfully, once we got underway, everything went fairly smoothly. Unfortunately despite a good start to the game, we came out on the wrong end of a defensive game, losing 8-7. After a good hit in the first inning, I flied out in my next two at bats, a rare case of my hitting the ball too hard (although I could have hit the second one harder, I could feel my hands already coming off the bat when I made contact. It was a very solid hit, I wonder what it would have done if I had swung through harder). With two games left, we won’t be able to crack .500 in the regular season, but considering two of our four losses were by one run and we had a tie, our record easily could have swung the other way.

In fact the league seems very balanced this year. Today’s games all finished with a one run margin of victory, which is entirely rare if not unprecedented in our league, except for the fact that it’s the second time it has happened in five weeks during this season. Amazing, and it means the playoffs are truly going to be a toss up.
