Off for the summer, but I got the offer to teach my class again next semester (budget, etc. permitting). I also picked up my reviews from last semester this week (I’m sure they’ve been sitting in my box over there for a while now) and received the usual scores (mid 6 averages on a scale that tops at 7) with 5 or 6 written comments. The theme for my written comments the semester before was that they wished I taught all their classes, this year’s theme was that I knew what I was talking about. The two negative comments I got was that I didn’t deviate far enough from the book (which I do use as a skeleton, but add on top of. If you just read the slides you’ll miss the things I’m adding) and that I didn’t assign enough homework (okay?). I did get my all time favorite comment this semester, however, and I present it here paraphrased and edited for language (the entire process is anonymized, so I don’t know who left it):<\/p>\n
This is one of the few professors I’ve had who:
\n1) Knows their [stuff]
\n2) Isn’t a condescending [a]hole
\n3) Actually does a good job of explaining concepts<\/p>\n
I kind of feel bad for them if that has been their experience at school, but was glad that I got the chance to give them a good experience. It’s gotten to the point where I look forward to receiving my evaluations, although I am not looking forward to when a class blindsides me with some negativity I don’t notice (I think I’m safe for now).<\/p>\n
In what has been a busy week education-wise, Jess and I signed up for a class together through the fee-waiver program that aims to tell the real story of forensic anthropology (and not the Bones-ified version). Think anyone will get it if I tell them to call me Agent Booth? I’m certain there will be several blog stories coming from the class in the future (it starts in late August).<\/p>\n
